TOWING ADVICE

Postby 1STGENFARMBOY » Tue Mar 02, 2010 2:37 pm

looking at my mods, and considering i have my stock fuel pin and exaust housing in the barn do you think i could turn
the pump down,and-or switch things back and tow alittle better as far as egt's go and excessive smoke, i'm
for shure going to put a 5in tail pipe on and take off the stacks while im pulling my white camper. :lol:
let the oppinions roll.

thanks Dar

I think your 80hp sitcks can be a contributing factor. Try something a little milder.

Your stock convertor will also rob you of power, and make the engine work harder than it needs to in order to get the power to the wheels.

How is your lift pump output? I dropped 50-75deg, and probably 75% of my smoke when I went from a near-dead stocker to a low pressure piston pump.

Leave your 16cm housing on it- with the stock cold side, you need the faster spool.

That's my thoughts thus far.

when i got my truck it was absolutely stock, and hauling heavy or towing anything at all was an adventure in inefficiency, especially with the steep, curvy terrain i was surrounded with at the time. torque converter upgrade is a must, the 'entry level' hughes unit i put in made a world of difference. you can fine tune your fueling, especially with the starwheel, to minimize smoke, but still have the power available when you need it. the 80 horse injectors might put that theory to the test, but it would be worth a try. as daniel said, the 16 is the exhaust housing you want, that was the second best mod i did on my truck. like you say in your sig, i think the best trans upgrade for towing comes with a shifter that goes thru the floor and a third pedal...

I had the same problem pulling my 28' toyhauler trailer,1400 deg easy,I also had trouble keeping my boost up(too fast) lol :roll: and smoked like a freight train.I was able to put the stock fuel pin in and run the star wheel almost to the top and back the power screw off 1 turn from(1/4 from runaway)I am able to get by with it. It is quick and easy,I also don't use my trailer that often.
