rough running

Postby jaycannondale » Sun Mar 07, 2010 5:31 am

hey guys, don't know how to explain this but my 93 dodge really runs rough when its running warm. basically to explain it better, on a cold start obviously it runs a bit rough until it gets up to temp, then it runs pretty smooth. its when i take it out for a bit, shut it down for about 10-15 minutes. when i start her back up idle is smooth, but as i start to drive, the higher the rpm the rougher it gets. i did notice its eating a little anti-freeze as well. could i have bad head gasket or is there more than one problem.?

hey-Hey!!!,
Don't mistake me for one who'd casually lift the head on one of these...but it certainly looks like you're going to( though perhaps not casually ). On gassers in my youth, the good ole compression check did a fine job of locating a bad gasket. It may be that your leak isn't going to be out of the expected cylinder-cylinder variation yet, especially if it is one jug leaking into the water jacket instead of two that are side by side.

If you're going to crank it, do make sure it doesn't start...:)
cheers,

at work wednesday i got a job that was to find a coolant leak, as i was giving the truck a look over i noticed the resivour had coolant on it so i checked it out some more. it didnt appear to be leakin from the cap. about half way down on the moldin there was a ring of coolant on it adn i thought it was a bad mold or something. then i opened the cap and there was still about 14 pounds of pressure on it. it had been sittin for a few hours shut off too. i talked to my boss and he said to do a combustion test on the coolant (combustion int he coolant aka bad head gasket) so i did that and it failed that test. maybe that will help im not sure but it worked for me

You didn't say what you have done in terms of maint and troubleshooting so I have to assume none.

Adjust valves if not done in the 100,000

Change fuel filter and be sure it is the correct one.

Pull injectors for testing if not done in the last several thousand miles.

If it starts right off after setting for a night (or a few days) you can rule out an air leak in the pump or fuel supply.
