What is this line?

Postby Redneckintraining » Mon Mar 15, 2010 5:23 pm

On an 89 Dodge W250 there is a metal line that goes from the top of the IP to the top of the block. It has kinda a U shape to it.It is on the side of the IP closest to firewall.

I turned my truck up a bit but it was idling a bit to high so I unbolted it and the return to access the idle screw. On reassembly I accidentally broke the hollow bolt.Whatever it was it was pretty dry in there. Is it needed?Other wise I gotta drive a ways to get to a IP shop were they might have the bolt.

sounds like the afc line. they can break if you look at them wrong, just ask dpuckett. mine had been replaced with 1/8" line, which i later replaced with 1/4" air brake line. this is a good time to upgrade to the larger size, and its really pretty easy. i think i did it in 15 mins or so.

I used 1/4 in air hose, just get a couple 1/8 npt fittings/ You will have to drill and tap the afc cover, at least that's how I did it.

I think 1/4" airline looks better. ;-)

That's how i did it... cost like 10 bucks and takes about 30 minutes tops to do. I put a shut off valve in line on mine to be able to shut off the afc control.

Also, i dont know how much timing your pump has advanced but if mine has been advanced 1/4" and i couldnt fit a 90º fitting into the head of the engine because the pump head was too close so i just swapped for a 45º fitting and all went well.

with your pump that close how do you adjust the idle screw?Or is it already backed all the way out?

It was just the banjo bolt that broke on mine, not the hose.So I just got a new bolt..the other options look nice but then I would need to get a pipe tape..and remove the cover so I don't get metal shavings down there..

I ended up turning the high speed screw out 2 turns,The power screw in 1/2 turn, and the idle screw out 2 turns.I didn't know that such a small adjustment could have such an effect on the truck..."she goes fast now". I might turn it up more but I need to get an EGT gauge first..

might as well buy the pipe tap, iirc its the same size you'll need for a pyrometer anyway.
