Just bought nice completly stock 1990 148k

Postby billyebob25 » Mon Mar 29, 2010 7:01 am

Hi,
I just bought a stock 1990 4x4. It runs 75 up and down hill but I have to have it to the floor all the time. Could anyone recomend the easiest upgrade for mild hp increase. I was thinking about inner cooler, larger turbo, or injectors. Open to suggestions.Thanks.

Make shure your throttle is opening up your pump all the way and if its not you can move your ball in to the inside hole, back up your throttle stop screw, put a 366 govenor spring in,turn your power screw up alittle, turn your fuel pin to deepest point. you mite want to put an EGT guage in it, and that should do it. it will make a huge difference. ;)

75 is about right for a stock truck. Both of my 89's topped out there before I had my way.

Thanks Farmboy,
Excuse the ignorance what does EGT stand for? Tachometer? I would be a little concerned about revs and temp, But this sounds like an excellent start!

Thanks

Exaust gas temp, I think what will help you the most is go to Dieseltruckresource.com and then
go to the thread( FAQ/Knowledge base How do i... look here first A.K.A the sticky) you will learn more
in an hour than i can ever teach you, just scroll down untill you find where it talks
about the VE pump which is what kind of injection pump you have and read away. all of us on here
will be glad to help to. let me add this go to the 1st gen section and then to the thread i said and
it will be posted by wannabdiesel there are alot of topics scroll down till you see performance
and read it from top to bottom in order, there are videos and everything to help.

Also, what gears does it have? If 4.10s, that's about right stock. If 3.54s, check your throttle lever for slack like mentioned above. It should do 85-90 with 3.54s.

Power and RPMs are two totally different things in a high torque low RPM diesel. If you need to go 75 all the time, I'd either recommend a gear change, or a governor spring change (that will allow the engine to rev higher- 32-3300 RPM is about as fast as I'd go with stock valve springs). Granted, more RPMs require more fuel, too, so keep that in mind. You should still see 22-24mpg hwy with that truck if you drive somewhat conservatively.
