problems with turbo rebuild NEED HELP

Postby 93DodgeCummins » Sat Apr 03, 2010 9:59 am

Does anyone have any good ideas on how to get the exhaust housing off my turbo? I am currently doing a rebuild and i simply cannot get it off.

hey-Hey!!!,
I used the bolts that clamp the snail to the cartridge as push-points; I warmed up the snail with a torch and drive a flat-blade screwdriver in between one of them( the bolts, IIRC the one by the oil inlet ) and with some pressure on them hit the snail with a hammer. Have to be careful with those bolts. You want just enough looseness so as to take an appropriate wedge and not so much backed out that you'll wreck the threads 'cause there is so little engagement.

Now you do know that the nut on the tubrine shaft is a left handed thread, yes?
cheers,

Soak it on some WD-40 (or something of the like) overnight and try again. 15+ years of heat cycles and rust are working against you. :)

I know the feeling. Superior Turbo and Injection is my back-up plan. I do not intend to use them though; heat it, oil it, heat it, oil it....and then the wedge and hammer should get me home...:) That said, I'll start oiling it in place at least a week before I plan to do it, start on Friday and only admit defeat on Monday when I can take it in to ST&I if I am not back together. Re-assembly with a little bit ov never-sieze so it won't give me such fits when I finally have to rebuild it won't hurt at all.
cheers,

ok guys i have everything disassembled... I ran into an issue. THe rebuild kit that i bought doesnt have a piece that was broken inside my turbo. Is there any place where i can buy a single part for my Holset H1C?

i figured out that piece was called a thrust collar

Check with a Cummins dealer, or a turbo rebuilder. Probably have a better chance at the latter.

Wipe it down with some cleaner like acetone? It should just be soot. If it was me I would not worry about it.
