Exhaust Brake in My NEW D250

Postby ktekst » Wed Apr 14, 2010 3:10 pm

I picked up a really nice 92 d250 last night. It has 65,6xx original miles on the clock. It has a cummins(jacobs) exhaust brake. I just wanted to get a few peoples opinions of it before i take it off. Maybe I should just leave it on idk. I don't like the idea because of the extra wear and tear on the valve train.

The kit was over $1200 in 98 when it was bought and installed.

Anybody with experience and opinions, im open ears.

Thanks ktekst

give it some time, get used to it, and chances are you just might like it. after having one on my crew, i cant see not having one. id put it on my goober but i need a downpipe first.

it saves wear on your brakes, helps a cold truck warm up faster in the winter, provides safer towing, and confuses people at stop lights. plus they are fun to play with. if you are worried about the valvetrain, upgrade to the 60# valve springs. this will also make the exhaust brake more efficient since it will have less tendancy to float the valves. if you arent towing much and just drive it, the stock springs will probably be fine. i cant really think of any negatives when used properly, other than a bit of a restriction in the exhaust. its well worth it IMO.

I will gladly take it off your hands and put the "wear and tear" on my valve-train.

I am not a fan of this type of exhaust brake because of the pressure it holds in the cylinder head. At our shop we have seen some dump truck and semi tractor cylinder heads and when theyve had an exhaust brake on them the guides and seats always seem to be worn to near nothing.

Im not a professional and i am a youngster but this is what I know. I do understand that this could be from improper usage too and I would have to ask to make sure wether or not they were this type of exhaust brake or the type that hold the ex valve open.

Wonder how many miles those trucks had on them when u seen the valves worn out. Just a thought. Like u said improper use is prob to blame. U know the clown that tries to shift with it on. Ya that guy the one that doesn't own the truck and don't care. Nothin but a wheel holder.
