Well I thought that I would give you guys an update.

I finally got my engine all torn apart today. The bearings were scratched and had material embedded in them. The rod bearings that were in the connecting rod half (not the cap) all seam to have a worn spot on 1/3 of the bearing. I will get pics soon.

The pistons have a little scoring on the skirts but I dont think it was from heat, I think the previous owner neglected it. also there is alot of junk in the oil rings. But the bores in the block look very good.

As of right now my plan is to take it to Diesel performance solutions and have them build it right, Josh recomended that I use the industerial pistons over the marine pistons.

I was concerned about the placement of the injector spray pattern of the 435s I bought from Powerpartsengineering. I just thought that I would report that you can see the pattern is very tight and all in the bowels. There is no indication of fuel being sprayed on the piston top. I think that this backs up my observation of no idle smoke.

My last observation is that I have an international casting symbol on the cylinder head, it looks just like the navistar emblem. The block says brazil on it. Is this correct for a 91 N/I cummins?

My head does not look cracked at all. It is a 9mm. How riskey is it to reuse?

My guess is the block was replaced at sometime. It is very rare to find an engine with mismatched casting factory parts. Most all 1 gens are Navistar cast, meaning International since they go back to the tractor motors of the Consolidated Diesel Company joint venture between cummins and Case-IH to build engines. If your crank is also cast brazil it could have just been a mix and match motor, but if it is US I bet its had a block put in at sometime.
