helping choosing the right 1st gen

Postby blackrocktrucks » Mon Aug 23, 2010 11:43 am

Hey Guys you have a great site here and as you can see im new . Not sure if this was the right place to put the thread. Im looking to buy my first Cummins truck. Right now i have a 00 ford v10 superduty with 41" tall tires on it and it my DD. Im tired of the fuel millage, wearing out my $400 each irok tires and not being able to tow anything. So im looking for a 1st gen to take the place of my DD and do some towing when need be. I have a few question dealing with year, tranny, interior room ext. . . ..

What i would really like would be a 93 Cummins, stick, 4x4, reg cab 8ft bed, a/c power door locks ext . . . but im kinda a large guy, im 6'6 330lbs and last time i drove a old stick dodge was years ago and i don't member the room they had in them. So this leads me to think that i want a auto tranny. But then im kinda scared on the reliability of the trannies that came in these trucks. I don't know when they started putting the OD 4 seep trannies in the trucks but are they worst than the 3 speed 727s? cause i found a 89 dodge close by but its not intercooled and its a 3 speed. So i guess my real questions are could i drive a stick every day comfortably? if not do i go auto? but what is the best auto for fuel millage and holding up to around 300-350hp? cause i plan on doing some work on engine and ve pump. Also truck withh have 4" of lift with 35" tires. Thanks in advance for any help guys. thanks kyle

I got a buddy that's driven mine and he's 6,4 he says its a little close when workin the clutch. Idk I'm 5 9 and I got more room than is needed. I would go for the manual trans over auto any day. Mostly for towin and being able to hold any gear and down shiftin to slow a load. If an auto is what u end up with then it will end u needin a tcoverter at least be for u feel any power out of it. To many have said around here not to be true. I've driven stock ones that I thought mine would out work any day with the same motor and rears. Only diff was trannies.

Towing heavy with 35's won't be the best. The brakes are bad enough as it is. Also the big tires take hp and fuel mileage away. The 727 is a ok tranny and so is the later 518's. Alot of the 518's had issues with tps and such which will effect overdrive. That problem can be fixed with aftermarket parts and wires. The 727 trucks had 3.07 gear ratios which are no longer available,,, anywhere. I'm 6 foot and drive sticks fine but your alot taller. 5 speed trucks are harder to find but do tow better. The auto's get up to speed better. I have 2 5 speeds and a 727 auto. I like them all. :D

hey guys thanks alot for the response so quickly. I might just do 4" and 33s but im not sure yet. Sounds like i thought the trucks are a little tight. Might be looking for a auto and just doing some upgrades to it. So is the 727 the same as the 518 just with OD? what about fuel millage of the 727 v.s the 518? also what diff ratios were offered in the 518? cause if i could find a 4.10 truck with some 33s-35 and the OD the millage on the highway should be good i would think. Now for tranny shops to "hop" up the 518 are parts avable for them to hold up to 350hp with no problem? I really just want a reg cab, if the ext cab doors open it would be a different story. thanks kyle

Hey. I'm also 6'6 and soon catch you on weight :D I have a 1st gen reg cab 5spd. The clutch or the stick shift is the last thing you have to worry. They don't bother you at all. I have the seat on the furthest position and it's totally ok. But in a perfect world another two inch further wouldn't do any harm. But I like it! 8)

Erska very true, Im 6' 4" and have the seat back, with tons of room to manipulate the shifter, the hardest part is going to be finding the truck for the right price

I'm about half the size of you guys at 5'11" and 150 lbs. I feel like i could do jumping jacks in the cab  As far as the tranny goes i rolled across the scales at 11700 today with a load of scrap and my tf727 auto did as good as any non-lock up no OD trans can. Fuel mpg is ok with the tf727, a got 20.8 mpg once

Well....

Haywagon, 1st and foremost WELCOME!

Second, this is nearly a year old.

Thirdly, he hasn't been on for awhile. Only made 2 posts in a year...
