VW TDI Fuel Mileage...

Postby CumminsPower59 » Thu Feb 23, 2012 11:19 am

I know several of y'all got TDI's and the like, What kind of mileage are y'all seeing? Mine has been taking a downward slide since I bought it...down to low 40's and I hit an all time low of 37mpg a few weeks ago  I almost always get fuel from the same place, same pump. B2 blended. Last weekend I was in a rush to get to the woman's place, and I didn't get fuel near me, I filled up when I was up there. I went to a small mom & pop quick trip, they had diesel $0.14 cheaper per gallon than everywhere else, so I said, why not  Well, my mileage on this tank has shot back up into the 50+ mpg range. I got a 04 wagon, so it's got the bigger tank. I know that @ half tank, with the trip meter @ 500 miles, I am getting 50+mpg. It has gotten over 800 miles on a tank numerous times, but hasn't in the last two months. Hmmm...I dunno. What do y'all think :?:

Edit;
Ooops! Forgot about the "Other Diesels" section...I guess this should have gone there. Feel free to move this over there Mr. Admins'

Funny thing is, the B2 blended stuff comes from a rather large truck stop, one would think that their fuel would be decent....I dunno. The mom&pop joint has had the least expensive on road diesel fuel anywhere on this side of Iowa for quite a while...I might run the truck up there and fill it up before I heade to Nebraska, just to see if its the fuel or the VW...

:bom:
On a VW IDI forum (pre-TDI with a dash of TDI'ers in there) there was a thread on who got the worst mileage. Something like 29mpg... A lot of racing was in that mix.

You won't get as good mileage on the bio, but you're helping the enviroment. Of course, I'm offsetting that by 2x everyday, so :P

Even at 2% blend, I haven't noticed much of a difference. For the first month or so I owned the VW, I was running B2 and was getting 48-52mpg, but has steadily dropped a little bit each fill up over time. I don't buy much into the "greenie" crap, but that truck stop has good prices and is within 10 minutes from the house, so when I was spending $400-$600 a month in fuel, it adds up. I might end up switching back to the co-op in Durant, just 5 minutes away, I never had an issue with their fuel, other than being 5-10 cents per gallon higher... :?

04... Is that the electronic VE, ALH coded block or the PD, pump-deuce engine?

Unfortunatley, it's the cam eating PD...although the cam is in great shape, with 176k on it. I check it every 10k.

I have a 2000 Jetta 5-speed, it gets 480-520 miles on the 13 gallon tank. Best tanks I get 40.

I was hoping it'd get higher when I fixed the air-bubbles-in-the-fuel problem, no luck though.

I haven't checked the intake for carbon build-up yet. I don't know what else it could be.

Granted, with 200-300 pounds of stuff in the truck constantly, larger-than-stock tires, driving 80 MPH a lot of the time and a big hill on the daily commute, I wouldn't expect much more than 40 in the best case scenario.

When I check the cam, I got to pull the egr port open/closer thingy, it sticks over the valve cover. There is a fair amount of soot in there last time I checked, but since it was gonna be torn down for a timing belt at 180K, I left it. Gotta do that shortly, gonna mic the cam while I am in there, along with replace the water pump, and buy egr block off plates as I can't get a egr delete pipe for it. I did spot a small amount of oil on the lower intercooler boot, wondering if that micro turbo that is on it may need to be replaced. The thing runs great otherwise, heck I even got it to roll a large amount of smoke today on accident, traffic was being stupid and I stomped on it and it snorted pretty good for being completely stock

When I was in the market, I heard all the horror stories about the PD engines eating cams, like a fat kid goes through cupcakes, so I was searching for a ALH engine. This one was too good of a deal to pass up though, 1 owner, always garaged and meticulously maintained, heck it even smelled new. 166k on the ticker, got it for $5200 ;)

I have a 2000 Jetta 5spd ALH Tdi. For the first 40,000 miles I owned it I checked the mileage religiously: winter average was 44-45 mpg, summer was 50+ mpg with an overall average of 48 mpg.

My car has been on a minor mpg slide as well over the last couple years. I cleaned the intake last fall. It had roughly 25% clogged. I just had the timing belt done and I think i'm due for new injectors (according to my research the oem nozzles have a service life of about 150,000 miles and i'm at about a 190,000). I intent to go with drivebiwire nozzles set for max mpg here in a couple months.

Best mpg: 57
Worst mpg: 40

Brothers best mpg (in his 02 Jetta): 72

Most miles put on one fillup: 844

How fast do you drive? Old lady or cruise at 75?

Maybe I need new injectors. It has 240,000 on it, if I can move my best to your worst they'd pay for themselves.

I haven't noticed any smoke.

i don't know how yins are gettin 55+

i have tried to coast, take off very easy, and all that crap and just can't get that good.

it could be crappy fuel here though.

The guys getting 55+ are ones with a straight pipe OR use a resonator and block the EGR off. Now, a local pastor has a bone stock 01 and he drives it conservatively and has reported 61mpg @ 60mph on a trip near Rockford. IL to see his daughter in Boston, MA...

I didn't see anything mentioned about winter fuel.

Around here the fuel distributors switch to a winter fuel blend in the winter. My mileage always goes down with winter fuel and back up when they switch back to regular diesel in the spring.

Maybe your regular station has winter fuel and the Mom and Pop station still had summer fuel in their tank.
