Compound makes a big difference too. I had a set of Bridgestone blizzaks that were great. Non studded, but a great winter tire. Bastards discontinued that model when I needed new ones, so I went with some cheaper winter tires. Studded, lots of siping, but boy do they ever suck. Even with 600 pounds in the bed they had almost no traction on anything, but dry pavement
