Tripple singles VS Dual tandem

Postby pulltilbroke » Mon Dec 12, 2011 1:40 pm

Ok I'm gonna be in the market for a new trailer here in the near future and was wondering what the opinions were between 3 7000lb axles VS a dual tandem setup.

Please discuss
90 W250 reg cab, Modified knuder valve, reversed reciprocting dinglearm adjusted, High volume flux capacitor, upgraded whirlygig, A clutch and a hitch
93 W350 ext cab dually, getrag and a few adjustments

x4 on the dual tandem. A friend of mine has a triple single 30 footer and it slides sooo much when turing tight

Triple axles handle weight better. They have almost no sway when hauling. Load weight is distributed more evenly. And if all axles have brakes then it will stop quicker
Triple axles negatives are, most older trailers have frame cracks from flexing above the axles, they wear out the shackles and spring hangers quicker, they are mortal hell on bearing and tires.
Another vote for Dual Tandems.

I've had both, duals all the way and also with duals you can limp a flat to safe place to change to a spare, tripples ruin wheels when you try that.Rocky

Sound pretty unanimous Dual tandems is the way to go.

OK now the Legal part, being this will be for personal use will I be exempt from a CDL or will I need one because the gcvw will be 36,000. I will be hauling a loaded 1stgen puller with a slide in pickup camper over the neck of the trailer, on a select few occassions I will be pulling 2 loaded 1stgen pullers

Heres what we were thing about getting but in 35' flavor

Do you have a Class A CDL?
You're likely going to need it.
A dual Tandem is rated at 20,000, most single wheel tri-axle trailers with 8 lug wheels are rated at 21,000, with your 4x4 being rated at @ 10,500 pounds you're well over CDL required territory.

Your GCWR would be in excess of the 26001lb requirment. If you run farm tags it is possible your state will wave the CDL requirment, but in reality that is typicaly only good for within 150miles of your farm. If you get a CDL you will also have to have an up to date medical card. They are kind of a hassle but not really that big a deal. Mainly just a way for the government to make some more money since I run into plenty of truck drivers that still can't drive.

Andrew when I was in the market for a trailer, I looked into Kaufman's. They just look too cheap to me IMO. I also don't like the ramps. Do you have any Cornpro or Load Trail/Max dealers in your area? Here's mine, well mine is actually a single wheel version: http://loadtrail.com/detail.cfm?model=G ... am%20Frame

Oh and damn I'm glad I have a class A CDL 8) .
