Engine stands

Postby ahale2772 » Wed Dec 14, 2011 5:41 am

what do you guys use for diesels?

ive got a beefy frame for an engine stand sitting in my shop, but lacking on the means to get it mounted to a 5.9.

I'm thinking about building an adaptor to attach a motormount (just the cast iron part) to my stand.

is that not a good place to go from? I really want to have it mounted perpendicular to the stand, so the weight of the block is not sticking way out.

but the proximity of the 4 engine mount bolts to each other scares me, it dosnt spread out the load very well. im sure it would hold a bare block, but should I be worried about a full dressed engine?

advice?

I've actually seen a couple of mounting fixtures built just the way you described, bolted to the motor mount holes and they seem to hold it just fine.
You could build the stand so it has fixtures on both sides.

A 2500 pound Harbor freight stand holds them pretty good, too.

hmmmm ok, I may just steal that Idea, a fixture for front and back is a very good idea.

I've seen some seriously HD stands before. but they are big $$$$

I've got a block and rotating assembly on a 1000lb. advance auto parts stand, and It saggs like a bad word. Kinda scary working on it. I am planning on buying 2 good heavy stands soon.

Man yes they are  I'd love to have one myself but can't justify buying one due to the fact I do have the opportunity to rebuild these things. I either install used or reman motors now . I did rebuild a 6cyl farmall on top of a piece of plywood. Had it setting straight up resting on its bell. Crank install was a PITA like that

I ended up just drilling my stand's plate out to the holes on the block, once i get her set up i''ll snap a piccker, may still build a support for the front, if its super heavy.

I'd like to get it to hold a full dressed block...eventually

The one we have at work is an OTC. All the engines mount to it on the side of the block. I've been scared to see how some mount, the holes are so close together. I'd say ours would mount on the oil filter side, should be 4 holes there someplace to bolt a plate to.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

got her mounted on the motor mount, surprisingly sturdy, im not worried about it at all. I need to build a pin system to hold the engine in certain positions. other than that im real happy with this stand. found it in the barn, looks like some leftover from my Dad when he used to occupy the barn, before mom-dad divorce BS.

the engine is balaned as pictured here, not perfectly level, nut the COG is definently not in the center of the block.
