Tractor Fun!

Postby Farmboy » Tue Dec 20, 2011 10:28 am

I know how much you guys like engines... and a lot of you are from the country... so I figured you all would enjoy some photos of a tractor build up... 1951 John Deere A that is...

Thanks to Phillip I got my new to me powerblock home saturday night... which for those of you that don't know takes my two cylinder motor from a 5.50" bore to 6.0" bore..

Now the motor has some rust pits on the cylinder wall from sitting around so right now it is looking like I am going to have to bore it +.125" which will take me to around 398 Cubic Inch!!! that's right... that is from 2 cylinders... got two big coffee cans going back and forth in there...

Here is what the cylinders look like after a little honing and a photo of one of the pistons... With lots more pictures to come after I start ripping into in... :D

OH thats a baby, my old D has 502ci from the factory and is now punched to 7 inch pistons, makes it alittle hard
to crank by hand though. gota have all your ducks lined up and your toung just right for it to crank up.

(D) don't make a good pulling tractor though, so your power block A would probly walk on by me. i weigh 6,450 with
nothing on it, so it's hard to get the weight where you want it.

keep us posted with the build.

Yup, small ones! My R has 6.75 bore stock. I'm not sure on the cubes, less than Dars D, but I know it will out pull it. You want to see a big block, the cylinder is 15" long. That's one hefty piece of meat right there!

Keep us updated, we love this siht! 8)

I'm just now getting into these 2 cylinders and they are fairly cool. We bale hay with a 630 in the summer and my boss' father has a 720 diesel pony start. That 720 is one cool, cool tractor

I'm being given either a B or a 60 if i fix the other. Sounds like a good deal to me 8)

Pete Pete Pete, check it out.

i believe the R brought out in 1949 and went to 1954
Diesel fuel
5.75 bore with 8.00 stroke
415 cu in
16.1 comp
1,000 rpm
with a 24.6 cu in pony motor.

however you are very correct your R is a horse of a tractor, 7,500 lbs or so.

Even though my cubes is bigger ( somewhere in the 538.5 range) I've always wanted one of the big diesels R, 80, 820, 830.

but my dream tractor is a 730 standard diesel electric start with 3pt.

I think my favorite is the 720 diesel row crop tyicycle front end. Don't really like the sheet metal of the 30 series...

Ellis, you are one sick puppy!

Dar, sorry, you're right! It's been 4-5 years since I last worked on the beast, I thought it was 6.75. I know the stroke is 8", but the cylinder is 15 " long. :P Mine is a '49. Someday I might quit playing with the truck long enough to put the pony back together and finish the tractor. Naaahhhhhh!

Dar I couldn't resist the opportunity

Besides I've never seen most of those tractors anyway, most have been sold off for scrap metal around here. Something about people around here liked the farmall/IH/case stuff better, tons of it down here, those and the 8/9n fords :yuck: You'll be proud to know that my father-in-law and I do have a 1941 model M that we're trying to restore,he's a PITA to work with thou ,wants everything perfect but says he wants to garden with it :| I say why bother making it perfect when your gonna work it and scrape it up :(
