Starting a webforum

Postby Begle1 » Thu Feb 02, 2012 11:26 pm

Does anybody know how to do it?

So far I have managed to register a domain. After I do that, I gather I need to lease some space from a hosting company and then somehow manage to install the forum software onto that leased space?

I'd like to just make a forum like this one, for me to funnel all the people that feel like they want to be my friend on Facebook, because no way is that account being around for another week.

I thought you were smarter than this?

This forum is built and supported by phpBB. Says so in the copyright at the bottom of every page.

I have used and administrate another forum that has phpBB as its source code. The backside admin panel is easy to use, setup, and update.

Just because you will have a forum doesn't mean they will use it. Nothing interesting on it, just another site to "talk" where as they are on something all their friends are on a bigger site with more traffic.

I thought phpBB was just the open-source program installed on the server?

What are you going to call it? Analeigh Sanchez lovers of America?
I've decided that Facebook isn't that bad, most of the time. A lot of my friends are on there quite often, so it's easier to message them there, I get a response faster. However, I am only on a few times in the evening, so they are outta luck!

phpBB is the source code to run it. The program is PHP/HTML engine and usually MySQL for a database. Is that the geeky jargon you are looking for?

phpBB does include a setup but it is a series of webpages/.cgi programs to set up the main look, database, backups, back doors, etc.

I've heard of this LAMP jargon crap, how do I implement it?

So do I only need to upload the phpBB files, or do I also need to upload Apache, MySQL or whatever else files?

It does not come with a web server nor database. Your host site needs to have them. My favorite hosting site is 1and1.com. They already have the web forum so you just click the add web forum button. They use Apache and MySQL as their choice of servers and databases.
