Trailer Brake Controllers

Postby cmann250 » Tue Jun 19, 2012 4:47 pm

My dad and his business partner recently picked up a gooseneck trailer and as of now I'm the only one with a gooseneck hitch. It's a 24 footer with two 6k axles that have single wheels. The brakes will work eventually. With the weight and speed that that trailer is capable of, I really should have brakes.

What's a good controller? I know you can spend as much as you want, but where's the compromise?

Thanks guys

Go digital but not to fancy. I have one that displays percentage,IMHO its the best way of knowing how your trailer brakes will react without the jerk and grab, tire sliding crap.
Cost was 60$ over 6yrs ago at O'Reillys.

Mine is from Curt also, this is the third one I've had in a truck and haven't had any issues with any of them. I've sold a bunch and haven't heard anything bad from customers.

Prodigy, or if you want the best of the best, Maxbrake. I have 2 Prodigys and I love them, once you get them set they work great, and if you need more, just touch the button and it boosts the setting up to 3 steps.
The Maxbrake is better, it has a sensor that goes in the brake line at the master, then as the pressure goes up the trailer gets more brake. It works smooth and fast, and the trailer stops as the truck does, not a few seconds later. They are wicked pricey though.
I got my 2nd Prodigy new on the Bay for about $85.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Jack I won't even put gauges on the pillar  Too fancy. I had a ancient Tekonsha when I got the truck, but I ripped it out and gave it away for some stupid reason. I think I still have the wiring under the dash though

I'll have to look around and see what's sold locally. Thanks for the input
