Should I trade?

Postby The_Head » Mon Jul 23, 2012 7:30 pm

A co worker of mine has an '02 Dodge Extended Cab 4WD long box, Cummins, 6 speed, 177K on it. He just put a FASS in it, but he messed up the injection pump before he did it, so it's going to need a new IP eventually. It's a nice truck altogether, he has the alloy rims with some kind of oversize offroadish tires, looks really nice.

We were kicking the idea of doing a trade, my truck plus 5 grand for his truck. What I had in my mind if I did this was to do the P-pump conversion to fix the fuel problem, do a clutch, some 5 x 14's and a 63/68/13. Should be good for 500 whp. Problem is with the amount of cash I have to put on top, I am going to have to cough up 10 grand or so.

What do you think?

Personally, no. Like you said, it is going to need a new VP which is over $1000 right there and you seem to have a nice truck yourself so I see no reason to trade. I'd at the very least make him replace the injection pump if you wanted to trade because there is no way I'd trade a nice 1st Gen for a VP truck that will need work.

I'm sure the mileage on the '02 is quite a ways off of your '91 as well, tires kill mileage. Just look for a P-Pump 2nd Gen and be done with it if you want to go that route. You can find them decently priced if you look hard enough and you wouldn't have to bother with a conversion.

My truck has only 118K, but almost all the major systems have less than 30K.

I'm just itching for something newer I guess.

I'll trade you an '02 Subaru for your truck.

If you really want something newer I'd find something you really want and either trade for that, or sell your truck and buy it. I think you'll be happier than trading and having to spend a ton of cash to make it what you really want.

Oh he77 no,5gs and your truck  . I'd think a twin truck would be worth a little more than that,he'd at least fix his before I'd even consider trading.
FWIW the VP thing is over with an upgraded supply pump any how

How much do you think my truck is worth though? The way I see it, it's way too modified and that brings the value down to most people.

It will bring the value down for most people, but for a lot of teenagers or younger people it may bring the value up. If you listed your truck on CumminsForum or another forum where there are a lot of younger people, I don't think you'd have a problem selling it for over $6k. It is a 4wd truck which brings up the value, and you do have an upgraded automatic which adds to that as well.

A lot of people like 1st Gens too. So if you did find the perfect truck for you the person may do a partial trade. Like say, an '02 Subaru AND a '98 Expedition.

Yeah, no. If that's all you think I can get for this, I might as well keep it forever. 47RH here I come!

I honestly don't have a clue, but I have seen people asking over $10K for trucks like yours (good shape, low miles, 4wd) but I don't know if they are actually getting that price or not.

If you want to stick with an auto, the 47RH is the way to go. My father has a mildly built 47RE in his '97 and it's a night and day difference from the tranny in my truck. Mine is stock though, but still the lockup is like another overdrive and it extremely nice. If I were planning to keep my truck an auto I'd be finding a 47RH.

Your truck and 5K for a 2nd gen with a VP throwing death codes. Pass on it.

His truck listed somewhere with death codes showing would bring maybe 6K. If he was lucky.

Well what if he got the IP replaced then? Nadaguides is showing 8800-11000 on trade in and 14400 retail value. I'm not even going to look at the blue book for mine.

My good friend has a MINT 2000 RCLB 4x4 with an NV4500 and 180k miles, 100k since the IP has been replaced.

Can't even get $12k.

Theres plenty of 2nd gens out there. Many never get close to what those dream guides say for prices. You can bet a dealer isn't going to offer 8 to 11 for that year model. Now they will ask for that 15k on resale.

I just looked at a clean 2001 model CC/SB 4x4 a couple of weeks ago. It had 130k/auto/bedliner below the doors and the lower bed sides. It had a tuner/ rebuild front end, new brakes all 4 corners. Interior was very clean. It was priced at 12k OBO. It sat there for 1.5 months before it disappeared. This was on a very busy highway.

A clean reasonable milage 1st gen setting in the same spot at 10K wouldn't have lasted a week.

I have less than 5k in the '02 E/C 6 speed I have, even with the body parts it needed.
But that's saying a LOT for what amounts to a glorified parts truck.

If you're seriously thinking about it, if I had to give an extra 5k, I'd make him fix his.

FWIW, nice '01-'02 6 speed Q/C 4x4s (SRW or DRW) are still bringing 10k if they aren't rusty and have under 200k on them.

A VP is nearly as easy to rebuild/renew as a VE is and with a proper fuel supply, just a hardy.

Mark.

I want to convert it to P-pump though. So, what you are saying is, I shouldn't have to put as much cash down... how much?
