Ever try to buy something that might not be for sale?

Postby RumbleFish » Tue Oct 09, 2007 7:42 pm

Anbody ever try to track a vehicle down by the vin? Its not really easy...and some ways may not exactly be legal (don't ask).

What kind of tips do you guys have to buy something that you don't even know is for sale? I especially don't want him to know I used to own it and try to pull a premium out of me. I know somebody (like one of them slick New Yorkers, or a Missouri good ol' boy)has to know a good way to show up on his doorstep and talk him into selling this truck to me. Questions, comments, tips, anything you have to offer is appreciated.

Find the biggest piece of junk you can to drive up to their house in, tell them you have been saving up your hard earned money to get something better to drive back and forth to work in and you were driving bye and saw the truck. You liked it and wondered if it was for sale. 8)

I could come up with some real junk, but it gotta be able to make a 200 mile round trip to check it out. My buddy's diesel golf (85 w/swapped in 91 turbo motor) looks like total crap, and he has volunteered his 52 mpg beast to transport me down there.

If this doens't pan out, I guess I'l lbe in the market for a different 1st gen. MUST be a manual trans and have 3.54's. Really prefer a 2wd std cab. Talk amongst yourselves.

Why do I get the feeling Daniel and myself were just insulted?
Just because we drive slightly less than perfect trucks?

Not quite the tip you were looking for, but...
A friend of mine used to ride around until he saw an old motorcycle or snowmobile sitting in the weeds, then go knock on the door. I think he had a 50% success ratio. Not bad for just asking.

Insulted? INSULTED??? If you call being sought out for your expertise in a certain area, then I guess you were insulted :P

I know a guy that buys old rusty trucks from people's yards and stuff, sorta like your buddy. The difference between them and myself, is that they are inquiring on something that is back in the weeds. Obvoiously it hasn't been used in a while. The truck I am after still has current registration.

What would somebody need to tell you in able to get you to think about selling one of your vehicles (I'm not talking about anybody's cummins truck...I know none of you would give them up to a stranger on the street)? I am hoping this guy isn't an enthusiast like us and to him it is just a truck. I am also hoping that he has at least one other vehicle, so that he still has transportation if he does decide to sell this one. This is beginning to sound like it might be more of a PITA than it is worth....but I'm not gonna give up untill I get an answer from this dude.

Jeff, just for future reference? "Slick New Yorkers" live about 4 hours east of me!

That's what I was getting at, just pulling your chain!
Got anything to trade the dude? Or, just go and ask, you can usually tell by the look on their face if they are interested or not. He may love the truck, and you ain't gonna get it, or he may have just had a problem, and wants it gone. I know if somebody knocked on the door and asked if I wanted to sell, out of the blue, I'd say no! If it was my gasser, 8) ! How much ya give me for it!?

Sneak past the dogs and loosen the fuel-solenoid connection.

Pour some oil under the engine, some 90WT under the rear, smear some 90WT around the inner sidewall of a rear tire.

Poke a hole in the vacuum-line.

Give the guy a day, or so, then inquire if he likes the truck and would he recommend you buying another like it.

Might not be after this one..at least not yet. I gotta unload my crew first. Then I found a gorgeous 93 D350 club in the auto trader. If that one is gone, or the guy won't deal any on it, then I'll bbe after my old one again. Anybody wanna buy a crew?
