Bought a couple trailers...

Postby meby » Sun Sep 16, 2012 6:10 pm

I bought a 8'x12' tilt deck single axle trailer and an 8'x16' deck over tandem axle trailer this weekend for cheap. :D I want to make these street legal so I can use them off of the farm. I know i'll need to add safety chains, lights, and maybe some reflective tape. My question is that one of the trailers has mobile home axles and wheels under it. The rims are split rims - do you guys know if these are legal or do I have to convert them?

Thanks,

I know that D.O.T wont pass a trailer with mobile home axles. I've found that as long as you aren't using it for a company they don't bother you around here at least.

I've been told by a semi tire shop employee that they are 100% NOT legal. Depending on how picky your DOT is, I'd run them if they have good tires and worry about it later. Indiana's DOT will let you get away with about anything. Our ex-mobile home frame trailer is farm use only and has a hay wagon bed and back on it

I figured in worse case scenario I can either use it for a cheap hay wagon (paid $125 with no decking or lights) or find other axles. Do you know if split rim axles can be converted to regular rims?

I had searched before and found info stating the axles were the same as normal Dexter axle's and you can change the spindles to 6 or 8 lug and swap the spings since the mobile home springs suck. Take one of the spindles off and measure the inner and outer bearings and compare those to the 8 lug hubs

I'm thinking of a true split rim where the rim has two halves that together make up the width of the rim. There's a lip in the center of the rim that holds them together when the tire is inflated.

Are you thinking of a 2 piece rim where the rim and tire are separate from the big heavy (usually 5 spoke) hub? They usually attach with wedges and bolts. This kind is what our mobile home frame trailer has as well as others and it's fine with DOT.

I did not know the difference. The rims on this one are 2 piece where the rim and tire are separate from the cast hub. In that case I should be good as long as the tires don't say "mobile home use only".

I guess the next question is how many ft lbs should they be torqued to? I would guess its pretty important to have all of them torqued to the same spec.

Those nuts for the wedges don't need to be overly tight. Give 'em to much, you can split the cast hub where the studs are threaded in. Tighten them in a star pattern, and evenly. 125# should be plenty. Make sure to use anti-seize on the studs and threads. That way the wedges won't jamb against the stud too soon, and prevent being torqued properly. Clean any rust on the studs or the tips of the wedges where they sit against the rim as well.

Thanks.

I priced out tires yesterday and a local shop has them mounted for $78 each for 12 ply. I thought that sounded like a good deal. Much better then online prices even. :o

Were they DOT approved or mobile home use only?

I think they're just biased ply tires, nothing special. They're probably 8.00-15s.
