Serp. Belt and tensioner pulley question

Postby peobryant » Wed Oct 03, 2012 2:41 pm

I was replacing my alternator today (again...) and as I was putting the belt on the grooved part of the tensioner (looks like the same material as the belt) slipped off and I can't for the life of me find it. So, does it absolutely have to be there and if so, where can I find a new one? I need an answer fast otherwise I probably won't make it to S.O.P. Just my luck too. I'll get a picture if no one knows what I'm talking about.

Thanks.

I just took those. Where I'm pointing in the first picture had a grooved rubber belt on it that had disappeared.

I'm not sure what's missing. My pulley is completely smooth, no grooves on the edges.

Parker, what you were seeing was the inside of the belt. With AC it comes off the crank pulley, around the tensioner, then back down under the AC compressor, and straight up to the alternator. Back down under the water pump, up over the fan, back to the crank.

Some tensioners have grooves, most don't that I have seen.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I was wondering why there was so much slack.

I'm officially an idiot (as if you didn't know already) and I appreciate the help. Hopefully this new alternator will work and I'll be able to make the drive.
