FORD Rep came by my shop! lol

Postby ellis93 » Thu Oct 25, 2012 7:45 am

A representative ford the diesel division of ford came by yesterday to offer up a 400$ class to "train" us to maintain a 6.0 and 6.4 diesel motor. Really, they don't offer up service intervals in the ford book that comes with the hugely over priced trucks?!?!
This dude and I had one hell of a conversation over what should be considered "maintenance" and a failure of design causing more problems than is needed. I also asked him about the design flaws of the radiators I've seen lately, I was told ford had addressed that with a tsb and a new part that takes care of the radiators but I got no farther explanation of what it was, all I do know is you can't buy a radiator for a 6.4 with a warranty from any of my distributors
After a while of this guys brand worship speech I was starting to lose major amounts of patients with him and he spyed my dodge sitting in the back of the shop parking lot and he started in on it, whoo hold on now, somebody could end up with some hurt feelers over my truck and told him as much. He just said that the diesel of yesterday couldn't handle near what the new could and that the mileage differences was way different between the two, thats when I cut him off there and asked him just how much mileage a ford was suppose to get these days. I was told that they should get at least 18 on the hwy and 16 in town. I responded with well that old dodge gets better than that,it'll knock down 21mpgs on the hwy and not much less in town, and could out pull any ford you point out. I of course added not fast but pull none the less. Guy just couldn't believe that and said that I was crazy.
What's a Cummins guy got to do to get those power joke girls to realize that ford ain't where its at and if you want a motor, you buy Cummins. Not a cat,not Isuzu, and not international......Cummins

We need a slogan, some kind of saying that'll stick in the small sectors of the small minded.

.....Cummins,hauling all the heavy stuff so fords can stay alive, or Cummins,if it wasn't here, there'd nothing to base a good motor on

You rang?

I theorize that if Ford put the DT360 in trucks instead of the IDI, Dodge would have went under long ago. Dodge's revival was the Cummins and if Ford got the I6 DI diesel when Dodge didn't offer a crew cab, a big block, or a diesel, I think that would have spelled the end. That 360 is supposed to make this 6BT look puny, but I've not had a close look or a chance to mess with them. I also wouldn't throw the 3406 under the bus. My description of the 6.0L is a diesel powered antifreeze sprinkler and they are a nightmare, period. The 6.4L is infinitely better, but I find common rail to be sketchy. I'll let them get 20 years old and let's see how they're doing.

I interact with you Dodge guys too much. I used to defend the 6.4L

I honestly know very little about the 6.4,but don't come blow smoke up my a$$ about a 6.0. I also believe that ford pawned of some turd designs on the unsuspecting public with these newer engines. I would say, from my short experience and memory, that untill 98 you could pull the hood on a ford truck and the trans on stick models and you'd have the motor out. in 98 thru 02,newest I'll fool with, you pulled the grill, upper half of rad support,AC cond, i/c,rad and trans on a stick model to make it easy. Not that big of deal but a little aggravation. Doing a head job on any wasn't bad,if you left some of the rear bolts in the pass head you were golden, only thing that would totally screw you over was the stainless bolts in the cast flang on the rear of the turbo on those trucks,I think in 98 or so they changed over to band clamps back there so I can say they were praised by me for that.
In all of that crap above,I never touched one body mount bolt, try that now, that my friends is stupid. To sale someone a truck that makes you totally dis assemble it,to work on it is flat out crazy.

I won't so much as put a fan belt on a 6.0

Was he driving a Ford Diesel? My guess would be no. I dropped a truck off at our local Ford dealer last month for a faulty tire sensor and a guy walked in with his lawyer because it was the 21st time his new 6.7 had been back in 7 months. He was not happy and making it known.

No,he was driving a Taurus,lol.

That dude also said that the 6.7 was a ford engine, not internation. I had him pretty hot when he left so I got no explanation of that statement, you guys know anything about that.

I know Ford and International are no longer partners and Ford has started building its diesel in house. The 6.7 was known as the Scorpion until Ford won the right to keeping the Powerstroke name. They renamed the Scorpion the powerstroke then. From what ive gathered the 6.7 is a major pos that Ford is trying to keep quite. That was told to me by the diesel mechanic at that dealer when i told him i was looking at one. All he told me is he is not allowed to talk about problems but he suggest either Cummins or Duramax if i was looking at s new one.

its not just the engines that are the problem. who designs a truck that the cab has to be lifted off the frame to sevice a turbo or replace a head gasket. i mean did they not think these repairs were ever going to have to be done. thats truck design and drivetrain engineers not working together.

They are making it so you have to take it back to the dealer.

I bet if enough people got tired of that and filed a class action against ford then they'd change direction some. A super duty is one big truck, there really is no reason for them to pack it in like that.

In all fairness i think ALL manufacturers are heading in the wrong direction with their design strategies. They are making maintenance more difficult for everyone, makes people NEED the dealers.

and yes, i agree cummins is still the best overall :)
