Is it just me or...

Postby meby » Sat Oct 27, 2012 2:39 pm

do the stock automatics in Dodges really suck? I'm still hunting for a replacement truck (4x4) and drove a 98' 12v today. Nothing wrong with the trans, but those stock converters really stink. I'm not sure I could be happy with an auto anymore!

You don't know the HALF of it. ;)
I will say that the lock-up feature addressed a major problem, but they are seriously deficient no matter how you look at it.

They need some attention, that's for sure! If I get another auto truck it will get a shift kit and a converter as soon as I can afford it. I admit the one in my 97 was shot, it was in limp mode most of the time and the converter slipped so bad I bet I couldn't have pulled a trailer up a hill. The rebuilt one was so much better it was like putting a stick in for comparison. ;)

Yeh. I can't hardly believe it, but i'm still considering buying one with an auto and a lot of rust. The first thing i'd have to do is buy one of those expensive Goerends or something converters and upgrade it. Good thing its really cheap.

My buddies 2nd gen was referred to as a turbine powered truck. Floor it, watch the RPMs spike, then watch the speedometer slowly climb.

You just had one that was rust free with a 5 speed. :?
Why go backwards, when you can likely afford to upgrade?
At least look for a manual!

I am currently feeling the pain you may go through with my '96 auto.
Low power, can't tow 20,000 pounds very fast (fortunately, some might say), takes forever to get there, worried about exploding the tranny.
Yeah, it's hell when you're 500 miles from base with a load and relying on a Chrysler automatic.

I'll post pics of what you SHOULDN'T tow with an auto sometime soon.

Empty, mine's tolerable. Loaded, it's disappointing at best. Non-lock-up is not for towing, at all. Getting up to speed takes an eternity  I find that shifting on the column helps alot though.

Jon, I compared mine to a jet plane. Wind it up to 2200, and watch it slowly glide away!

pfffffft the one in my 518 would do 2400 before the truck would start rolling. Stomp it on a flat road. 2400 agin. Glad I had the G56 in before I had the 3200 spring installed.

I guess if I do land an auto, it will have to get a new converter right away.
