Back at it!

Postby ahale2772 » Thu Nov 22, 2012 5:10 pm

trailer is hooked up.... cash burning a hole in my pocket!!

off to pick up an 89 singlecab 1ton 2wd truck in the morning. Saw it advertised on facebook, its been gutted of the engine and trans. What i'm told is that the cab is rust free... MINT was the term used. Apparently the rear half of the frame is a bit ruff, but the front is good. Its 3 hours away from me but it seems like its worth the trip. the guy wants 600$ for the truck as a roller, it was a 5 speed truck so I assume the rear end is 4.10

Funny thing is, just two nights ago, I went to NH to pick up a few fedex 175HP ppump engines, so one of them is going to get stuffed into this 89.

plans are for a 100% towing geared truck, ppump engine with an hx35, mild tune, use the intercooler setup that I still have from my 89. Throw in an alison At545 that ive been tripping over for a few years, and then throw a rockwell axle out of a fedex truck in the rear, I'm told they are geared quite high, so it may allow for 70MPH towing with the 3 speed non-lock allison. Those axles have the big 10lug pattern for 19.5's and I know I can pick up those tires and rims for DIRT cheep. they also have stock spring pad width, so that works nicely. Most of these parts i allready have, besides the rear axle. It should be a fun project.

I'll throw up some more pics in the morning this is the only one ive got, Can wait to be back in an 89 8)

I thought they were a 4 gear trans. Some were even lockup in my research.

The AT545s and MT543 are 4 speeds w/o overdrive.
The MT543 is the lock up version.
Personally, I wouldn't do either, as they don't have overdrive and they are so damned bulky, but then again, I guess so is an NV5600. :D

They always turn out to be red... Or maybe its me :)

I sure thought 545's were 3 speed, but i stand corrected.

Was going to get it this morning, but I got a text just before i was going to leave saying he only had a photo copy of the previous registration, in MA that is a total no go to try and get a title with.

He is looking for the original title when he gets back from thanksgiving with his family, and confident that he has is.

Just a waiting game now.

hey-o..

brought her home today, talked the price down a bit cause the doors are kind of junk, mostly because of the west-coast mirrors ruining them

otherwise, the cab is in great shape. the fenders are perfect, not a dent on them and rot free, cab corners, rockers, floors and everything else is rot free. the frame from the cab back is completly rotted out, not salvagable at all, from the rear cab mounts forward is ok. Plan is to somehow splice in a new back half of frame. Cab will probably come off pretty soon and get "pickled". Ive got a 91 cab with a mint condition greay interior that i will swap into this truck. still have most of the parts like radiators and whatnot to put this one back together.

some roof rail bubbling... im sure that will be a can of worms, but all in all, for a NE truck. its as good as it gets.

the 94 has been my current money pit, it got all the good parts from my old 89... cam, steed speed, studs, bee-hive springs, billet62/68/.84 its got 5x16's all the normal ppump mods. Just converted it from a 47RH to an NV4500, a swap I sort of regret. Broke in the new Kenneys pulling double disk today pulling this 89 home.

thats what people keep telling me to do.... but I'm really not looking to spend the time/money. going to keep it simple with a leafspring setup. its only ever going to be a tow pig

Put a short, stepside bed with a steel floor on it.
They made those from '81-'85 on Dodges.

not gona put a bed on it, building a flatbed for sure. Called and asked about a rear end today, the guy is going to keep his eye out for a rockwell axle geared 3.32, he said some of the fedex trucks came with them. best part is i can just take a driveshaft out of one of those trucks and cut it down. I looks like I will be making my own rear half of the frame though

found a set of doors today that I'm going to pick up, same color red, no rust at all
