Dana 80 carrier, what is this in CL link..?

Postby bgilbert » Sat Dec 15, 2012 7:52 pm

I've never seen a carrier like this. Can anyone identify it? http://stlouis.craigslist.org/bar/3342344098.html I'm looking for a SRW D80 4.10.

It's definitely not a "posi" or locker.
I think it's Eaton based and it definitely has 4 spider gears, which is a plus.

Dodge had something similar in the '70s motorhomes with the heavier rated D-70, it was also a non-locking diferential and similar in appearance and it also used a 4 pinion spider arrangement and 35 spline axles.

I do know that the internals on the 2001-2002 D-80s, even the lockers, are unique to those 2 years, in the Dodges.

Looking closer, that is NOT a Dodge axle, even.
It appears to be a 14 bolt, look at the retaining bolts on the axle, they should be 9/16s on a Dodge, those appear to be 3/4s, like on a 14 bolt.

Bill, that isn't a Dana 80, its an AAM axle. Dead giveaway is the third pinion bearing that is visible in the 5th picture, kind of like the old GM 14 bolt rears...

Look closer at the axle retainer bolts.
No AAM used that size of axle retainer bolt, they also used a 9/16s headed bolt, same as late dana 60s, 32 spline 70s and dana 80s.

{On Edit}
Ike is likely right.
Yeah, call me an idiot, turns out that the AAM DID use the 3/4s inch retainer bolts but only on the 1 tons.
My 2007 3/4 ton SRW one uses the 9/16s bolts, plus I somehow missed the "American Axle...AAM" in the gasket material.
Guess whose ass is blackest on this one?

Still it's NOT a Dana 80. :P

14 bolt/AAM same-same. AAM took over GM's final drive division in 94. All the same it's a GM axle :P

I didn't realize that it absorbed a part of GM, that's distressing.
I feel better about scrapping the 3.73 3/4 ton one that I have here. :P
Less than 60,000 miles and basically worthless to anyone local.

Yeah, I use to be a GM guy years ago...still retain some of that useless knowledge. IMO, that axle is pretty cool, third pinion bearing, no need to shim the carrier bearings, as they have adjustable "cups", drop in a Detroit Locker without having to rebuild the whole axle as it fits right inside the carrier. Kinda neat.....but that's me thinking ;)

That's what caught my eye as well. Thought the 80's only used shims to adjust the bearings. Don't know why they couldn't have put in adjustable cups like that. Would our lives easier to do that.

Begle1 would like a beefier axle if it wasn't geared for 4.10's.
