Sad day

Postby 1STGENFARMBOY » Sat Dec 29, 2012 12:36 pm

The leader of my cattle heard, the matrairch of the farm, just took her last breath with her head on my lap.

don't know what happened, just took a fine 400 lb bull off her 2 weeks ago, she did look a little thin but nothing
alarming, 3 days ago she got down, we put her in the barn with the loader, she seemed fine this morning eating
sweet feed and alfalfa and drinking, went back up just now and she was having a hard time breathing, i just stayed with her
untill it was over, she shure was a good ol cow, always had a nice calf and never gave me any trouble, the first one
to come when i called, the first one through the gate when i was changing pasture.....i shure miss her.

I butcher those crazy ones pretty fast... i'm shure you know how valuable a cow that leads
the rest of them where you want them to go is...

Thanks men....it's amazing how stinkin atached you can get to a cow, i hope the rest of
the bovine in the field was with her long enough to get trained, they all got out once
and were over 1/2 mile from the farm, it was 11 pm and so still your ears were ringin,
i just called them as loud as i could and here they cam down the driveway and i just opened
the gate and in they went with her in front.. that kinda stuff kinda makes you like one
ya know.

i could also change fields and walk them across the farm with no fience, just a bucket and
her in front.

sorry guys... i must spend way to much time with cows.

I always attracted the stubborn ass animals when i did farm work. You know the kind that no matter how much you tried they always did the ass opposite or the ones that bit and kicked.

Nice old age then. :)

I had a Holstein steer as a teenager. Got him as part of my pay for house-sitting for some friends for a few weeks. Was one of 3 they had, and had been a bottle calf. He acted more like a dog following you around, than as a steer. Though he did try to mount me ONCE! A quick hard blow to the head from my fist changed his mind on that! My mom hauled him into the salebarn for me when it was time. The guys in the ring thought he was trying to get at them and smacked him. But, all he wanted was to get petted on the head or have his ears scratched.
