NV4500 build thread?

Postby stillsmokin » Sat Jan 12, 2013 9:58 pm

Is anybody interested in an in depth build thread on the NV4500? I am finishing my third NV4500 in 6 months. I've learned quite a bit about how you can build this into that.

The current build is a 98 2wd chevy into 98 4X4 dodge diesel build which isn't really covered anywhere. Andrew is talking about building one for the dually and you guys know about him taking pictures.

Keep it a secret! Those of us that do it for a living (on the side) don't want anyone knowing how to build them ;) lol.

Bill, I was thinking you could do the getrag thread. FWIW, I think threads like this would save alot of members some major coin. The real trouble with the NV4500 are the special tools, I have some Kent Moore, Miller, Quad 4x4, and home made tools since I have so many to do. It's a major convenience.

I think I could get the special tools down to a minimum for a guy wanting to build one for himself.

I never used any special tools on the getrag either, on the NV4500 some tools are mandatory... Like the "wrench" for the 5th gear nut and the mainshaft holding socket. I also use a 10 ton otc push puller and a bearing separator plate to pull alot of the bearings off since alot of the parts won't fit in an average 20 ton hydraulic press. I use my old lathe quite a bit too, to make drivers and other tools, and to shorten the input bearing retainers for AA bellhousings.

Never used the wrench or socket you speak of,now the bearing splitter and press I've used. You can however get around using them. In my getrag tread I have shown how I get the bearings off without the use of a press and also how to get them back on with simple hand tools you can run down to the local ace hardware an get. Is it the ase master certified way to get it done,no. Will it work, yes. Half the reason people won't try one of these transmissions is the fact that others talk about some mystic special tool that performs some magical feat when something as simple as a pipe wrench or dull chisel will do.

Oh,and if someone wanted to pick apart the building of a getrag trans, you do need "specialty" tools for it,a micrometer and feller gauges

Are the internals of a gas nv4500 same as diesel nv4500 besides the input?

Nope, the cluster(counter shaft) is different. My knowledge is quite limted tho,I've only been in 3 diesel 4500s and 4or 5 gas burner. Of course you can press the front gear on and off the cluster,on early gas burners, effectively changing what it would work with,of course with that gear being keyed on that shaft your Cummins would eat it,least thats what I think.
