Will be full on air brakes, on these trucks. Not a mixed deal.

May not have done the job correctly. If they cut the line and tried to flare it themselves, it might not have been done properly.

Probably a 9k steer axle and 18k rear anyhow.

Even if it is 28k, if you register it for 25,999 or less you can drive it. It's what it's registered for, not the capacity.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I just looked it up for my state of MD and it was confusing. It said 26,001 and higher is definitely CDL and it is based on capacity not what you register it for (thats around here, not sure about your area).

Only thing I can't find is what the rule on air brakes on 26,000 or lighter GVWR. Lets say this truck is 24,000 but has air brakes...does that make it CDL?

With air brakes, you may need a Class B with air brakes endorsement. No big deal. Having the truck registered fir the weight you will be hauling, is still cheaper than an overweight fine. Its the 50 or 52k line, where you then also have to pay a heavy use fee. But, not a concern with that thing.

So I'm gonna check it out Sunday. Any sort of checklist from you guys that know trucks? First I have to make sure I can drive it so I'm gonna check the GVWR and GCWR. But what about looking over the entire chassis and such? I can inspect a first gen pretty well but a dump truck is new to me!

Basically the same as looking over a 1st gen. Just bigger stuff.

Basically, you'll want to raise the box, and see if it settles down with the truck off. How wet is the hyd cylinder around the end where the seals is. Pitting of the chrome on the cylinder. The PTO drive may have it's own driveshaft, vs the pump being direct mounted to the PTO drive. Condition of the hoses, fittings, bed crossmembers (bent or rot out), pivot pins where the box pivots on.

Stopping ability, tight steering, tires, brake lining condition (if any cracks in them, they'll need to be replaced), leaking steering box, cab rot out, all the lights work..............

Another word on the juice brakes. We run 3 five ton style straight trucks, 2 1980's GMC 7000's and a Ford F600, all with hydro-boost juice brakes and disks all around.

They all have very good stopping ability, far better than my first gens for sure.

I was skeptical of the juice brakes at first but now I like them. No air endorsement on the drivers license required and I find the disk brakes very easy to diagnose problems and to work on. A much simpler system to work on than air brakes. But we are just doing local deliveries and around the farm so in total we put about 25,000 miles on the trucks a year combined.

I took a look at it this weekend.

Mechanically really sound: V8 non-turbo international diesel (9.0 I believe), 5+2, juice brakes, started pretty well in 20 degrees, good dump. Problem was the guy said the body rot was too bad to put through inspection and I just don't have the time to fix it all. A super truck for someone who can welding in some patch panels here and there.

Why patch the cab? Put a good used one on it. Be better off in the long run.
