You guys know about International Dump Trucks? 1980 Single

Postby Diesel » Thu Jan 24, 2013 1:03 pm

Can anyone tell me what model this dumper is? All I know is 1980 International, diesel engine, and manual transmission. Is it air brake? Is it cummins/cat/navistar diesel?

If its got pancakes mounted on the axle that work the brakes it's an air setup. Theyre pretty recognizeable so you shouldnt confuse them with a normal braking setup. That truck looks heavy enough for me to think that it's gonna have air brakes.

I would also assume its got a DT466 or similar (smaller) International engine in it since I've never seen one that didn't.

Might be something like a S1800, or similar. The one we have at work is newer, and has a IDI 7.3 in it. That one may have the IDI 6.9L in it. Just don't recall if those engines were out in '80, or not. Wouldn't rule out a 6V71 or 6V92 2 cycle Detroit. Have also seen one about that age, that had the N/A 550CID IH V8 diesel (was also used in the 1468 and 1568 IH tractors). Quite an interesting engine. :) One I saw, was only about 170hp.

Depending on the engine, it could have a RoadRanger or be a 5+2. Have the 5+2 in ours.

May have an air dryer on it. Can't quite tell. Air brakes was an option on them. Ours does. Sure beats the chitty juice brakes!

They aren't too much to write home about. Not much legroom, but should serve its purpose pretty well. Treated right, they aren't a bad truck. Just don't expect a whole lot out of it either.

Air brakes would suck since that would make it CDL right? I'm not CDL.

Anything above 26000 pounds and/or air brakes is cdl. My guess is its got the bug natural aspirated V8 with a 2 speed rear. Its a 50/50 shot on brakes since both were available. If we knew the series it would help.

Does this view help show the air brake pancakes? I really can't tell and the seller (a used car lot) said it did then said it didn't and then he said it has a leaky brake line which makes me think juice brakes.

Im going to try and get a better picture from him. All I remember him saying is you have to pump the brakes because one of the lines leaks...that doesn't sound like air brake to me but I really don't know about these style trucks.

No pumping air brakes. You either hit the pedal and have brakes or you dont.

Alright so maybe it does have juice brakes. I wish I knew what model it was or if it was possible to tell just by looking at it what model it is.

With juice brakes, having to pump it up, doesn't always mean it has a leak. If no visible leaks, manually adjust the shoes up properly. Then, see if you still need to pump them up with the pedal. Sometimes that all that is needed.

One bad thing with juice brakes on straight trucks like that, it can be SO much more expensive to do brake work on them. Rebuilding one complete backing plate with all new harware, shoes and wheel cylinders can cost up to $300, for 1 wheel! (Been there, done that on a C70 Chevy grain truck. Was cheaper to get lucky with a fresh rebuilt complete backing plate for $35 at a boneyard. 8) )

Depending on the state, some only require adding the air brake endorsement, vs a Class A or B CDL.

I am 90% sure I remember him saying there is a visible leak that needs to be fixed because the previous owner "put a line on it" which doesn't explain to me why its leaking. But with that said it sounds like the thing isn't air brake. SO now I need it to be 26,000lbs or less right?
