What's it worth?

Postby Mopardragster » Wed Feb 06, 2013 7:48 pm

I came across a truck today and am curious what it is worth. Two trucks actually. The first is a 93 club cab 2wd Dually. Cummins, Getrag. 180,000 miles. Nice truck. Runs out good. Looks to be well maintained, has no rust, paint and interior pretty nice. He s asking $5,500 but feel sure I could get it cheaper. The second is a 03 four door auto Dually with 149,00 miles. It has been wrecked at some point with the air bags deployed as they are gone. The reprint was so so, and it has some dents and dings here and there. The interior is pretty nice and has SLT trim. The engine was ran with a bad injector and burnt the piston. And trashed the block. The block has been re-sleeved and is currently being rebuilt at a friends diesel shop. The guy who owns the truck can't pay the bill and gave the title over for money owed. I can get this truck put back together with the newly rebuilt engine for $5,000 OR I can but the chassis without the engine for $1,800. I have a good 91 12 valve I could drop in it and convert it to mechanical diesel. So, which truck is a better buy and which route would you go? I have two kids so the four door crew cab is appealing. The club cabs are nice, but those jump seats are not the safest way to haul little ones.

But are they decent buys? The 93 is in above average condition IMO. The 03 would be rated as poor since it is a salvage title truck.

As MUCH as your are willing to pay and as LITTLE as he is willing to take.
Hopefully he's willing to take less than you'll give.

A non-IC 91 D350, reg cab, 5spd dually (w/220k) went to $4750 at a auction last year. Was clean and straight. Well maintained, too. Ran like a top. :D

If the chassis on the 03 isn't compromised, I'd lean towards it, with the 12v under the hood............... Keep in mind that a 47RH will be needed, unless a manual VB in the 47RE/48RE will work with the 12v. Will have the needed room for the family. Or, do like I'm doing, and building a crew cab. :D Getting a Cummins, 4wd, NV5600 and D80 rear. :D
NEW- '82 CREW cab dually. Cummins, NV5600, 205, D60/D80. :D Work in progress......

'93 W350, CTD, ext cab, 5spd., HTT modded H1C, 4" exhaust, Kelderman single bag. 537k and counting!

SOLD- '92 W250, CTD, ext cab, 5spd

SOLD- '99 3500, SO CTD, 5spd

Traded off- '97 3500 CTD, 416hp/892tq.

Real world value for a 93 with original pick up bed and nice fenders and average paint & interior: $2500-3500.

Real world value with home built wooden flat bed or missing bed $1500-2500.

Outright sale to a dealer or real world trade in allowance from a car dealer:

Dealer auction value or what the dealer would expect to resell at a dealer auction - add 30 - 50% to the above link.

Internet forum that specializes in Dodge diesel powered trucks $5000 to a bazillion dollars!!!

The above prices are based on what i have either paid for or have seen locally or have viewed online over the past 9 years. Prices are also based on locations so they may vary.

I've bought and sold salvage title vehicles,as long as it was inspected, passed and titled so what. There are still folks wanting 10gs for 03 dodges down here and folks are still dumb enough to pay it. Put back together with a new-ish motor for 5gs is a good deal period. As for making it into a 12v, ain't no way I'd fall off into a grossly over weighted truck with an under powered power plant. Even if you hopped it up with a nice set of injectors and a huge turbo its still wont be what it was stock. Oops  I just blasphemed or motors

If the 03 is in good enough shape Id buy it with the cr engine and talk him down. Then when the cr goes down again then swap the 12v in. If your kids are still in car seats or booster seats i think its technically illegal for them to ride in jumper seats.
92 D350 Cab and Chassis. Auto stock, wiring gremlins. 330k miles
92 W250 Ext cab rotted completely out. Auto, pump maxed, 215 ppump nozzles, Denny T2 pin.
85 D350 single wheel, converted to cummins, getrag, turned up 2 turns and afc screw flush.

Okay, since you persist, I'll play along!

FYI, last July I bought an '05 4 door dually, 4x4 with a clear, non-salvage title, a dead commonrail and a good automatic, no real body damage, straight and complete, as well as totally rust free, for $3000.
IMO that was cheap, but it was also what any salvage yard SHOULD have paid for a dis-assembled truck with a smoked engine.
An engine was to run me 5k, way too much to spend on a POS commonrail truck, I believed, and a guy was standing here with CASH well above what I paid, so I dumped it.

$5500 is high end for a 1993 2WD E/C dually, the saving grace is the 5 speed, dually and extended cab.
Another saving grace, where price is concerned, is it's MILEAGE, if accurate.
ANYTHING 1st gen that is decent and 4wd seems to bring the best money, but is also usually in the worst condition.

So, are these trucks SCREAMING deals?
Not really, but they are decent deals, IF they are what you really want.

Mark.
