The great unknown- Clutches

I'm more than likely going to put a new clutch in that blue Ford. Kits are in the $80 - $120 range. (http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detai ... &ppt=C0015) Evidently some places will sell me just a disc for about $40, but I wager quite alot is amiss in that bell housing and I'd be ahead to get the kit.

Now the question. Do people resurface flywheels now a days or have they become disposible like rotors?

I'd welcome any tips form those that have dealt with a ZF5 before.

It can be turned as long as its still in specs.

What about taking that thingy that gives all four wheels power off of the back of transmission?

Caleb....unless its covered in blue spots or cracked up I never turn them,plus if it is turned to much you could run into clutch release/shifting problems. Not all folks in a machine shop are smart enough to know when to stop,specs or not. They're not making a whole lot to turn one and some could care less. All I normally do is scuff the surface with a sanding wheel to break the glaze and rock on. Another thing
,get rid of the roller need pilot bearing,switch to a bronze bushing. It'll shift better for longer,especially if the input is boogered.
As Andy already said,drop it all at once.

I'd rather not have to pull the pilot bearing out, but if it comes out, I'll replace it. Every ounce of my "farm sense" said "leave the flywheel be, it's fine", but I wanted a valid second opinon. :lol: I have seen a sucessful clean up of front rotors with an angle grinder, so anything is possible.

Replace the pilot bearing and throw-out bearing every time. Always fun having to deal with a pilot bearing stuck to the input shaft. Having to work around the bell housing, backing the PP mounting bolts out a little at a time, till the it comes off with the trans. We always have the flywheel touched up, too.

Do it right the first time, or don't bother. You'll get to do it again soon enough.

(Should probably have this in the "Drivetrain" section anyhow. ;) )

I didn't want to clutter an actual tech section with my pandering to the darkest of the dark sides ;)

Anyone have a wager on what a ZF5 with a BW transfer behind it case weighs? Or where the balance point is? :lol:

Caleb, if you dont have bad hot spots or heat cracks or much scoring, i use a DA with 80 grit on flywheels, this has always worked well for me.
93 w250 6 speed 4" exhaust, caution, work truck, she's no beauty. building 1 ton dually 4x4, dana 80, 48rh, 205 Scratch the one ton, bought frt. dually 4x4 98 12 valve with the tiny rear doors. rides so much better than the 93.

I'm not buying any parts until I get into it because I have no idea what all I'll need. I have no history on this truck, so who knows what's going on in there. I could drive it and not slip it, but the average yard ape would likely not be able to make it move in 3rd through 5th gear.

This whole project is all pending on whether I can trick someone into buying this thing at the right intersection of price and condition. I won't be budging alot if its driveline is in great shape with a new clutch. I like the 4.10s.
