Need some Medium Duty Truck Recommendations

Postby Diesel » Tue Feb 19, 2013 8:03 am

Hey guys, you may remember my post from a couple weeks ago: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=13996

Basically I am looking for a non-cdl medium duty dump truck. In my state I called and determined non-cdl mean: 26,000GVW or lower and it can be air-brake or hydraulic brake both are ok for non-cdl.

I just don't know medium duty trucks that well so I don't know what to search for. I've heard that some F600's have brakes that are no longer made, and I've heard that the 8.2 detroit pops heads, and so forth.

So if you own or have worked with medium duty trucks you've been happy with - please let me know what years and models to look for. Budget is around $5K

Be sure you get both your LOCAL or STATE CDL rules and the FEDERAL CDL rules regarding the air brakes and not needing a CDL IN WRITING and keep them with you!!!
The feds are basically of the mind that if it's 26k and under, you don't need a CDL, air brakes or not, BUT INDIVDUAL STATES MAY SAY DIFFERENTLY!!!

I had an F-800 (non-air brake) with a 5.9 Cummins that I kinda' liked, but it had that damnable AT545 Slip-O-Matic in it, then upon selling it I realized it had 4.10 gears, not 5-something like I thought and was told by different sources.
Dumbass move selling it, now that I think about it.

Keep in mind, if the truck is rated for, say 24,500 pounds, hooking ANYTHING behind it requires a CDL, as you are adding a trailer with additional capable weight, to what is now considered a COMBINATION UNIT.

This will then bring you into needing an A/B endorsement, as well, if the power unit (towing vehicle) has air brakes.

I've been around the Internationals mainly they are pretty decent, if you get a newer (late 90s- 2000s) they do tend to blow liner oring out around 6000 hours- supposedly the new updated orings\liners are supposed to fix it. injectors tend to be anouter weak source. and high pressure rail oil leaks. If you get air brakes, stay away from wedge brakes...I'd look more for airbrakes than hyd brakes, if it was me....You will run into air lines freezing if you don't keep up with airdryer maint.

i dont know if its a law, or just a requirnent for my job, but anything over 10,001 is concidered a DOT regulated vehicle and they require you to be DOT certified.

Thats for dot inspections, Mn is the same way only if its intrastate its 26001 lbs up it has to be dot inspected by a certified dot inspector...which sucks Fed is anything 10001 lbs has to have a sticker. but as far as cdl in iowa its 26001

Actually, the rule reads "10,000 pounds AND over".
If you are in Interstate (Crossing State Lines) FOR HIRE commerce, anything over 10,000 pounds requires an annual DOT inspection.
Part of the FOR HIRE requirement also means you have to run a logbook and adhere to "Big Rig" rules, pretty much Nationwide.
There is a crapload more, but I won't go into it here.

In all truth and honesty, the only thing you get away from, by running under 26,001 pounds, besides not having a CDL, is IFTA and Mileage reporting, all the safety requirements are the same.
If you are for hire, under 26,000 pounds and running IntrAstate in another state (Pick up and drop off in a state not your own), you will THEN need the Mileage Reporting so the individual States can tax you by miles driven in each state.

If you like CHALLENGES, I urge you to buy a 1 ton Dually, a Dual-Tandem 2-3 car hauler, which brings you to a GCVW of ~31,000 pounds and do it PROFITABLY within the first 2 years.

Some States require another certain set of (IRS) guidelines be met over, I believe 42,000 pounds, as far as licencing requirements, so you''ll want to look into that, as well.

Thanks guys.

Really looking for specific trucks to search for online. If you have specific models and years that would be most helpful.

I found a GMC but it had the 8.2T Detroit and so I dont think I'm gonna go look at it.

I should ask: is there a truck in my price range that runs the 6BT? Ideally it would be a cummins powered truck but I know the DT466 is good too.

The F-700/800s are even relatively cheap and easy to find in usable condition.
Another rig that's fairly cheap would be an FL-70 or FL-80 Freight Liner.
I'm kicking my butt for not picking up an FL-70 a while back, with the Crew Cab conversion, for $6k.

One of those times I had money and wasn't thinking.

Mark that thing is sweet! Asking triple my price range and not a dump truck but man if I had the money! I'd just daily drive it.
