What year is the new truck, another first gen? Also, I wouldn't worry about the auto, especially if the truck is near stock power. A good built auto can be as much fun, if not moreso than a manual transmission.

Owner of the auto truck says it doesnt charger sometimes and od is kinda hit and miss he thinks its the ecm. Could the internal regulator go bad and the ecm still run everything else its pose to. And also could a bad ground cause the ecm to act up as far od is concerned. I guess what im asking is how much more does the auto need the ecm compared to a 5 speed

From what I recall, the PCM in the '92 and '93 (as well as some '91's) trucks do control the charging system but I don't think it has anything to do with overdrive. That is either a bad VSS which should be located on the transfer case on a 4wd truck or a bad TPS which is on the injection pump. A lot of the times, taking the VSS out, cleaning it and re-installing fixes the overdrive issues.

I believe you can also convert a '93 to have an external voltage regulator. I love the fact my '91 has an external regulator as I'd hate to deal with the PCM if I had charging issues.

Personally, I'd be more concerned with the charging issue than I would with the automatic transmission. They are fine stock but if you aren't opposed to spending some money on it, a Goerend torque converter and shift kit would make it feel like a different truck. Or, if you really can't stand an automatic tranny you could always swap an NV4500 in the truck.
