Not a bad looking truck. Be a cool Cummins swap truck.

thinkin about it honestly, the 8.0 is a cool engine and all but its just a problem child in these rigs. i know jsut about everything there is to know about em, im about to put heads on this one. ive already replaced the oil pump and such.

think i'd rather have another D350 though. miss my old one and really love 1st gens more than a 2nd gen cummins. all around more reliable truck.

I had one of those in an Extended Cab, 2WD, 1 ton, 5 speed.
I hooked it to a 2-car trailer, after having run a 1st Gen pulling the same trailer, and it just didn't feel the same pulling a load.
I parted the truck out pretty quickly, sold the trans, rear end, frame and a lot of the cab stuff.
Only 1 drive train related part remains, care to guess which one?

It's been said that people bought the V-10 trucks because they didn't like diesels.
I can imagine that they gasped in astonishment at the fuel mileage difference between the 2, though.

If you like the truck and it has some sentimental value to you, you could swap in a VE Cummins. I've thought about putting a VE engine in a 2nd gen before.

it wasnt that they didnt like them, given there was probably some old fart lookin to haul without having to listen to the rattling cummins, but it was honestly marketed as the poor mans diesel. with double the horses and 50 more ft lbs of torque out of the box its not hard to see why the 10 was an interesting option. the Cummins of its day being a 6k option the 10 being a 3.8k option.. the major down fall of the 10 was ultimately fuel mileage.. but, when it come to pulling a trailer, they held their own.

personally im about 75/25 on a Cummins swap. part of it is the investment, part of its the sentimental value of tearing apart my grandfathers truck. me and him were inseparable when i was growing up. im leaning towards the swap though, im going to college for diesel tech, specializing in Cummins.

but the other half wants to restore it, put it away. and have a sunday cruiser. and get another d350 for a DD. eventually people are gonna realize whats under the hood. and they'll be collectors items, sorta like the grandaddy of the viper.

cmann250, i had a friend who put a 89 non ic block in his 96 ram, said it worked just fine. all the electronics plugged in even. call me a punk if you will, but i like the p pump for its massive fueling capabilties. plus finding a p pump engine just seems like less of a headache when it comes to adapter plate and flex plate and such.

That's really a non-issue. Easy enough to get those pieces. IIRC, the flexplate is the same between the 2 as well. I have a good used one, if ya want it. Out of a 93. Even the ring gear looks good. Probably a newer one.

Oh, I'm not a P pump hater like some are  I have a VE because that's what my truck came with. If it ain't broke, don't fix it :wrench:

I think a VE powered 2nd gen would be unique.

All of the ones I've had have been the same. I believe Philip measured one out and they're exactly the same, 1st gen vs 2nd gen.

I've swapped VE engines into P-pumper trucks and P-pumpers into VE trucks, not as big a deal as it seems, especially with the resources I have at hand. :D
Looking at putting a VE-ed 24 valve into a B-300 Dodge Van Chassis. It' all about how badly you want it, is all.

Given the dynamics of today's lending, a Cummins would have added ~6 months to a year more payments, so really the bang for the buck as compared to actual cash outlay is with the Cummins.
Then there is just what we know about maintenance, longevity and the real world of how it actually PULLS, not just some numbers thrown out for marketing.

As far as V-10 vs. Cummins, at the time, any more intelligent person looking at the numbers would see that the Cummins produced the torque and horsepower at lower RPMS, which correlates to less wear and less fuel consumption.

Before @ 2000 fuel mileage was a more minimal concern because gas was ~$1.25/gallon.
Oh how the song about diesel fuel economy and torque changes at nearly $4/gallon! ;)

I'd love to put a Cummins in my rig lol dont get me wrong! but, problem is im currently broke like the city's powerstroke... when my 92 burnt down the plan was to swap the VE engine in, but life is a b!tch... i had to sell everything. and im still paying off the bank for student loans... 12,500 bucks on premium snap on tools for school ya know..

Use what ya got, take what ya get  I'm glad to see not all people our age go out and buy (or have their daddies buy) a brand new diesel pick-up after high school.

The new ones look decent, but I'm partial to my 1st gens. :D (Plus, all mine are paid for, and were all bought with cash. :D ) My 93 has been one of my best buys to date! :D Can't wait to make my crew on the road. 8)
