Is natural gas a viable option in your area? Just wondering...

Not a really good link, but just what I got from a quick google search.

I don't really know much about them. Seen Branson tractors for sale with them. They are on the smaller, lower hp side. May need to hotrod it just to drag the Jeep around.

60hp would do it in a diesel.

I'll do some craigslist/ebay/internet searches to see what comes up.

I haven't heard of anything bad other than finding fuel. I have experience with several tractors that were made to run natural gas (or LP or propane, whatever). I know of a few converted trucks (previously gasoline powered) that have not had issues. There's also 2 fleets of semi trucks that run it locally (Ruan and Frito-Lay).

I do know that it's not the magic thing that people once thought it was in an engine that is supposed to run off of diesel.

Depending on how much they've used it,or how long will tell the tale. That siht burns hot and will burn hotter than some motor oils flash point....burning the oil off of the cylinder walls, leading to cylinder wear. I seen a Chevy 350 worn out at 80k and the blossman gas company here use to replace their motors (ford) every 3 to 4 years. crazy stuff

Why not use a Isuzu diesel out of a tilt master? They are mechanical and great little motors.

That's the final straw for me. I'm leaving this site.

Just kidding. Hold your applause

That I didn't know. Would using a different oil fix that? Or is it a give here, take there scenario? I'm basing 2/3 of my opinion off of engines that were made to use the stuff.

VW diesels could be an option. They even have the familiar VE pump in a few applications. I've seen a Japanese VE on a 4 cylinder Bobcat. I'm thinking it was in the 50 horse range. I could do a little research since the thing is sitting in my barn if that sounds like it'd fit the bill.

I'm open to any diesel that works.

To be honest, I've never paid attention to other diesels..........I know nothing about them.

What my goal is, is to find a Diesel 3-4 cylinder that is comparable to a Cummins..........I'd like a ve pump (lots have those) and no timing belts/chains......just gear to gear and one that lasts a long time.

I'd love a turbo diesel, but the reality of it is..........it's not needed if it'll last.

2.9L John Deere. 3 cylinder with several turboed versions. I know they make up to at least a 75hp model.

Only problem with all these engines is most come in tractors, etc. Ag govs, structural blocks, and possibly hard to come up with motor mounts and ways to bolt them to the trans, etc.

Ya, that can make it difficult. I have someone local that could match pretty much anything up, but he is in no way cheap or affordable. AMAZING work and quality, but he is also very aware of it.

Jeep is putting a 4 cylined diesel in the 2014 grand cherokee. I'll look for a link. I read it in a magazine. IIRC it's supposed to have over 200hp and over 400 ft/lbs of torque.

They've had them in the jeep liberty for quite some time.........they get a wicked high 20-25mpg.
