I've had a lot of interest in the Chevy cruze as well

But, I'm wanting to go back to pre emissions, pre computers and all that garbage. If all those things led to better fuel economy and/or longevity than it's for all the better.

However, neither of the above have come out of these technologies. It has done nothing more than decrease (sometimes maintain) fuel economy, and it raises the cost of maintenance.

How about a 3-53 detroit? Buddy of mine has a buggy (I think its called a gamagoat, supposed to float) with 4wd, 2wd trailer, so its 6wd. Approximately 50 inch military tires, all independent suspension, its gotta weigh well over 3500 lbs, and it does over 50 mph with an NP435 chevy 4 spd. Sounds pretty neat too, I think it has 80-90 hp, no turbo.

Gamagoats are pretty cool. But they are much smaller without independent suspension (unless there's different models). But now that you mentioned chevy and detriot, the 6.2 and the 6.5 in the chevys were built more for fuel economy rather than for towing/work. Maybe the key to 35+mpg might be in one of them?

He'll never finish that truck.

Last episode I saw he was making headers and running the exhaust up into the stacks. Damn shame he started that truck before diesels got popular, that thing would be sex with a 12v.

Look for 85 to 93 1.6l VW or since you're near Canada, 1.9L idi Vw diesels.

This statement makes me nervous for some reason. Maybe because the wife is gone for the weekend and I'm all alone? :?

Eric, My thought is a VW also. Perkins makes small 3 and 4 cylinder engines too. If you hunt around I'm sure you can find something to put in it.
The other thing is if the car gets 25-30mpg on gas, you are already farther ahead than running diesel because gas is so much cheaper now.

In my area diesel averages 25 cents more a gallon.

However, if I can get 40mpg out of a diesel I'm about the same as 35mpg in a car.......but I'm doing it in a larger, more comfortable, 4 wheel drive.

Now if I get 30mpg..........I'm slightly behind, but at least I trust it. I'm just done with gas burners, and the "new technology" that just creates nightmares.

The early TDI engines were non electronic with a VE pump. I've read that they can be fairly easily turned up to 200hp. I had a Rabbit with a 1.6 years ago. I could get 40 plus MPG always. Could get over 50 without trying too hard. I wish that I would have kept that car. Good motors, plentiful parts, and a nice little car.

P.S.: Never mind, the VE pumped TDI's are rare, or custom made.

3bt motors were never built for vehicle use so the governor setup (constant speed) is all wrong, might be a good pump shop could set one up but that answer is above my pay grade. I think they were all built for gen sets and pump use.
93 w250 6 speed 4" exhaust, caution, work truck, she's no beauty. building 1 ton dually 4x4, dana 80, 48rh, 205 Scratch the one ton, bought frt. dually 4x4 98 12 valve with the tiny rear doors. rides so much better than the 93.

Yep......a lot of the engines that weren't in a vehicle, that would have to be addressed. Luckily it's not too bad to swap that stuff out and/or change the gov/set up inside of a ve pump.

I'm also on board with this, been looking at the b3.3 Cummins. I know where there is a 4Bt cherokee, but the bodys shot. I've also thought about a extended cab Dakota, need to find something to put together to beat back and forth to work.

We had two TDI's up until a month ago, we sold the 98 Jetta to my daughter.
Anyway the Jetta (wifes car) was good for the low 40's in town.
I drive a 97 Passat with the TDI and I am getting 39-41 in town.
Its a decent size car (lots of leg room). Both have 5 spds.
Be carefull with the TDI auto in the early years, they had some issues.
The bad thing is my daughter was side swiped and they may total the Jetta.
If they do I am going to try and buy it back, not sure what I will put the motor in maybe a sidekick. It has 230,XXX miles on it and runs great, never misses a beat. The biggest problem with the 4BT (probobly the 3BT also) is the weight. They would work great in a 1/2 ton though, but to heavy for a lighter vehicles.

Once the Dakota sells, we will have only Cummins powered vehicles. Wifes pickup gets in the mid 20s, which I think is pretty good for whst it is. I hope to get mine back to the high teens, low 20s with a newer pump

I am reminded of a line in an old Montgomery-Gentry song. "I aint trading my family's safety just to save a little on gas."point is, if We get in a wreck in a Honda, Toyota, etc, we will be afoot. Plus, the bigger, higher cab of our 4x4s will help keep us above the nitwit in the minivan who was texting and hit us.

You can thank Government for the technology and crappola in the newer vehicles.
