Anti-theft ideas for our trucks?

Postby bgilbert » Sat Sep 14, 2013 6:47 pm

For years I've left a 'spare', or what I would call the 'ignition key' in ALL of my trucks. Last night someone got into 3 of my trucks, (I never lock anything) leaving the drivers door open on them. The only thing missing was the key I leave in my 'nicest' truck, the 93. Apparently they want to come back when I'm at work or the like and steal it at a later date.. Without changing the ignition lock cylinder, any ideas for an anti-theft device? FSS on a switch hidden somewhere? Btw, no more keys left in trucks again!

The FSS on a switch is a pretty good idea...

Your idea was the first thing to come to my mind when reading the title,a battery kill hidden under the seat would work better. Someone familiar with these trucks and a jumper wire would get it going quickly, with a battery kill spliced in the ground it would be game over.

2 position rocker switch, one way goes to the starter solenoid and the other goes to the horn. Splice it into the start circuit circuit and let him honk at your neighbors when he hits the key.

I always thought about a drop down arm that could be padlocked in the down position to prevent the use of either the clutch pedal or the brake pedal. The arm would clamp around the pedal arm and would have a foot attached where it touches the floor. This would prevent use of the clutch or brake pedal.

I like that idea a lot! Especially when I get around to the air horns, that will wake me up and get me out there quicker than flies on sh**!

Pull cable on a type of pull that doesn't retract on its own.

When it's out it simply will not start.

My old pull cable would pull out and wouldn't return on its own, and I a few occasions looked retarded.

Still going with the thought someone familiar with these trucks would still get it
Horn blowing or not if you ain't home, their gonna get it. The kill thing would baffle me for about a second.

Also note that a rollback car hauler will defeat any "keep in place" security system.
Our trucks should be out of the radar for thievery since the penalty is the same for stealing one of old rusting & worn out 20 year old trucks is the same as stealing a new Cadillac Escalade.

Can you imagine that inmate conversation afterwards? Henry gets caught selling parts from the 90 Dodge Cummins he listed on Craigslist and gets sentenced to prison for 3 years. There he meets Bubba and they start a conversation. Bubba starts the conversation by bragging he was caught running a mega dollar operation that involved stealing dozens of Cadillacs and high end Toyotas and exporting the parts out of the country and was sentenced to 10 years. He asks Henry what are you in for? Henry replies "I got caught stealing a 1989 4WD Dodge Cummins truck and sold the engine for $900 and the axles for $700 on Craigslist" Then Bubba and the surrounding inmates just can't stop laughing....

I've thought about rigging up a fuel shutoff. Putting it on an overhead switch and marking it lightbar or something. Or an air shutoff that works in the same manner as the fuel shutoff

I remember seeing somewhere that someone put a quick disconnect on their throttle linkage. I think I've also heard of so done placing a nail through a specific spot on the linkage that doesn't allow fuel to the truck. Both ways would be unsuspected but a pain being that you have to get in and out of the engine bay to do it. Maybe a quick disconnect at the gas pedal?
