Your fine its the guys who pump these numbers up that piss me off. That 5.4 I have at work is the same way it comes on strong at 2500 rpm and will wind a shift out to almost 5000 rpm before shifting when towing heavy and trying to get rolling.

The 6.4 in the trucks actually doesn't share any parts with the 6.4 in the srt's.

The SRT engines and the normal Hemis aren't too similar. Not sure if they share any parts (probably some soft parts) - but the SRT is a forged race motor. A good friend and MOPAR tech supercharged a 6.1 and said it just holds up to anything they throw at it...this was like 6 years ago.

Kenne bell pushed a stock 6.1 hemi to 1200whp with their twin screw supercharger. They're definitely tough, but they're still a little weaker than a cummins

It's just that it's the first year they're putting it in the trucks, so I'm a little worried. First year bugs, you know?

I know the 6.4 truck engine has many differences from the SRT engine from the reading I've done.

The local dealership has a 2011 Ford F-250 CC with the 6.2 for a crazy price. They're going to let me test drive it for the weekend. I might even hookup to my brothers 7500 lb travel trailer to see how the truck does towing. Will definitely reset the lie-o-meter to get an idea of how it does on gas.

Just remember, its a ford gasser, and under no circumstance should you pop the hood with the engine running...a sparkplug could smack you in the head

So, I test drove a 2011 F-250 CC Lariat with the 6.2L. I borrowed my brothers 5000 lb gooseneck flatbed trailer and took it up into the mountains a bit to see how the truck did towing a load in the range that I normally tow. The truck did fine, it was nothing spectacular obviously, but it got there. It needs the revs to pull the hills, I saw 4100 a few times pulling hills with the cruise on at 65 mph. I got 10 mpg pulling this load, which is not good, but I think it's ok if you're not going to be towing too much, which I don't. I think I would be satisfied with this truck as a light work truck. I'd feel kind of silly owning a new Cummins, using 10% of it's potential almost the whole time I drove it.

I've been reading other places the newer diesels don't like a lot of short trips to the grocery store, as the dpf gets clogged up causing troubles down the line. Do the 2013+ Cummins trucks still have DPF's or are they just urea injection now?

one of our 14 dodges 5500 is going through alot of urea he's had it for 3 months and has filled his tank twice. he does a lot of short runs and it sits and idles a lot which is probably the biggest problem. but other than that it's been good.

Yeah if I had a new Ram with the diesel, I'd be more careful about how I used it. I'd drive my beater car to the store. I'd probably do the same if I had a gasser too.

I believe the diesel supplement on our 2014 Grand Cherokee says that short trips are ok now because the DPF knows when the purge (not just on a timer like before). If im not mistaken, I recall reading that now the DPF systems wait to purge after about 20 minutes of driving when the DPF is nice and hot. So even if it gets lots of soot in there, once you get out on the highway it will clear out. And another thing I recall is that it suggested hitting a 20 minute trip once a week or so if you do lots of short trips. I think the new DPF coupled with urea seems like a safe bet...now if only they could make diesels hit emissions without an EGR...

John Deere and cummins have engines that meet emissions that are missing one of the three systems. One has no egr, and one has no dpf. Both of them are off-road only, but it's a start. Part of the dpf plugging issue is the factory tuning. It's stupid retarded (sometimes it actually starts main injection after tdc) and post injection just makes soot pretty much. Ryan Millikan tuned the owner of ats diesel's truck (4th gen dodge) that had stock injectors, 7500+ compound kit, dual fuellers, an atomizer, and all it's emissions equipment. Flogged it on the dyno, managed 650whp in the end, and couldn't force it to regen afterwards, because there wasn't enough restriction

Yeah, it would be nice to run light mods, such as something to undo the stock timing, but I don't really want to mod a new truck much more than that. I want something I wouldn't have to worry about for the next 10-15 years.
