Worse case scenario you've got $2500-4000 in parts money just for the engine and diffs. With 1st gens becoming harder and harder to come by the possibility to part the rest of the truck out for a substantial amount is quite possible if you're willing to put in a little sweat equity. Hell, I just paid $30 for a couple small pieces of interior trim that are probably worth $2 but I couldn't find them anywhere.

Of course I'm not advocating this by any means but it is possible. I don't know that I could stand to stare at a half parted 1st gen in my driveway but a 6sp 3rd gen sure would make it easier to look the other way.

I'm not sure about stock stuff, but my LED taillights cost $250 shipped. The headlights I want are going to be about $500 shipped. To swap in an s400 costs $2700+ (And really anything smaller than an s400 doesn't handle the heat the 6.7 can make) programmer and custom tuning is now in the 2000 dollar range. Built 68rfe can get into the 8k+ area (these are the ones rated at 850, and won't be warrantied without transmission tuning) interestingly I got my 5" exhaust with muffler for $360 while the 4" straight pipe 1st gen exhaust was over $400

We plan to keep my 93 til our boy is old enough to drive it. He will be 2 this coming summer. I have confidence that with new sticks, and a pump that aint worn out, it can get 20mpg on a highway trip again. It is PAID FOR. Has been since we bought it in 2010. I have to redo some stuff now and then, but it serves my needs quite well. A little body work and paint, and it will transition from jalopy to classic.

I drove a friend's 04 non HO with a 6 spd right after getting my wifes 04 HO auto. For what I do, mixed city/ backroad/ highway, the manual would be too busy, plus it just a hair faster than my 1stgen. I like the gear splits in my 5 spd, just my preference.

For a family vehicle that we can all fit in comfortably, get awesome fuel mileage, rides nice, and be safe, my wife's pickup is hard to beat. Plus, we have a backup tow/work truck.

I bought a 2nd gen extra cab in 2007 with 240k on it. Did a converter / flex plate, VP44 and in-tank lift pump, ran it to 350k or so, sold it.

bought an 06, g56, 4x4 with 90k on it. decided i didn't like the payment. I wish i still had that truck.

bought my 91.5 with 200k, haven't done much, but I dont owe a dime on it, and it suits my needs. I wish it had a 5 speed, and I wish it was nicer on the road.

Mostly - I didnt want payments, but i needed to be able to tow my jeep.

Same here, I don't want payments and I want a reliable diesel truck. Some of my friends have 3rd and 4th gens, they are nicer but still don't ride all that great. The 4th is a tad bit better than the 3rd, i really don't like the 3rd gen seats.

They all tease me about my "loud tractor". Then i remind them how much i owe on it, zilch.
