My 2 cents worth

Postby cougar » Sun Feb 23, 2014 11:32 am

Something bothering me, so I think I should throw it out there for you to think about.
We all know how difficult it is to get original parts anymore, so we need to stop destroying them. Or at least stop altering/modifying them in a way they can't be restored to their original form and function. There are enough aftermarket parts and enough group ingenuity out there now that we don't have to do this. Check the parts wanted sections and see how many people are looking for original parts. Modifications and upgrades are fine, I'm not against that. What I'm bringing up is we shouldn't destroy parts that are no longer available in stock form.
RIP 91.5 W250 5 speed. The great experiment.

Parts are as hard to find as finding "decent" people to sell them to you.

Idk,I'll reserve my opinion on these trucks, but I'll also say I tend to agree with you. Everything on these truck are hard as hell to find down here......even gas jobs are mia.

There were only 179,327 1st gens made. Therefore Dodge only made a corresponding amount of replacement parts.

I try to save old parts or modify them so they can be returned to stock when I'm done. Must be OCD or something, I hate to drill holes in the dash, hack up harnesses, that sort of thing.
I'm with you all the way!

I save all the good parts I can off of any old truck if I'm going to scrap them. Its too hard to find parts for any of them anymore and especially Dodge's.

This is just me, but I'm starting to not like the mass of the teen-early twenties young people that are buying these trucks because of the "cool" factor or whatever. Seems to me that they are the majority that are trashing these trucks. I understand that there are a good amount of younger people that own 1st gens that actually care about them and what not, but it appears to me that there are more that just want the "in" thing. When I was parts swapping yesterday, the young man I met up with and I were having this same discussion, and he said something that made sense, he had a term that he used to described what these younger people get...."1st gen boners". They buy these trucks and rice them out just like the newer stuff....

Ok, rant over

Bahahaha...1st gen boners.

This is literally the only kind of truck ive ever owned, Ive started with a 81 and now have my 93. I save everything I can, or get a spare to modify. I dunno how many times ive cut something, thrown it out, or gave it away to only need it later.

The worst part is seeing good, minimal/uncracked OE grilles freakin spray bombed. Yeah, my pile is rattle canned, but it looks halfway decent from 30 feet away, but seeing something like grilles bombed or other ricer crap just galls me. I know, I know, to each their own...but c'mon! Stop f'n up decent OE grilles! Buy a aftermarket one to rattle can! :puker:

And it's those trucks owned by said young whipper-snappers that get passed around like "that girl". Five owners in three years? No maintenance history what so ever. Oh yea and the $10k price tag because 2 owners ago put on rims and tires and three owners ago had it resprayed. That truck may as well not exist to the first gen faithful.

I'm not diehard first-gen-or-nothing, but I'm going to look for a rust free regular cab 4x4 here in a few years. I hope I can find one.

Caleb, I hope you find one too. 180,000 made, I bet there are less than 100,000 left today because of rust, accidents and people pulling the engines for swaps and sending the bodies to scrap (it galls me to see the folks out west pull engines out of rust free trucks... for chit sake, drive a little and use a rusted truck or something) . I really want to do two things with my pile, either give it a proper restoration with original color and all the options functioning properly, or find a really nice, clean crew cab to use the drive train in.

I've seen a few pretty dang nice 1st gens around here become parts trucks within months of being bought.

The ricer smoke show crap is still going strong around here, but it's mostly 3rd gens now.

No doubt Andy. I don't get the new kid seen, then again I didn't know what to think about the kids around me as I was coming up either. I was never in the mud riding thing, wasn't really into the drag racing crowd either,I went but never really tried to be one of the group,it always seemed it was better to stand to the side and watch them be stupid.
This newer ricer crap isn't really down here much, there the kids that have the trucks, mods, and hats to match but I don't experience the clouds or clowning. Then again it's hard to experience that stuff of your at work befor most even roll out of bed.
