You boys know anything about 60-66 GMC trucks?

Postby Diesel » Sat Mar 22, 2014 11:26 am

Just bought a 65 4x4 3/4 ton GMC. Cool old truck. Don't know squat about them! While I wait to pick it up I figure its as good of a time as any to learn. Its gonna need paint and I want to know the "leak spots" before paint. Had I known I would have pulled the fenders to do the cowl leaks on my first gen before paint...so trying to avoid that mistake again! Oh and the coolest part is that it has a 5.0 liter V6 in it!

Well get rid of that V6. It is under powered/ over weight. It drinks gas like a drunk on sat night.

The heater box is the biggest place known to leak. No issues in the cowl areas. Window shield gasket if its old and dry rotted.

My boy has a 67 GMC, we pulled the 305-V6 because a rebuild kit was $1,200 bucks

thay have some torque but no HP, buy unless it was a super low millage mint original truck I would pull it.

Current plan is to leave the engine for now...my cummins is the work truck so the GMC is just a cruiser for now. Once I get the frame wire brushed and painted, then the body painted, I will consider new powerplant. Ideally I would want a 12V in there and I don't think its out of the question but definitely not now!

Do you guys know if there is a front 60 that has matching spring perches? I don't care about moving shock mounts but spring mounts that work would be nice. Front disks wouldn't be terrible either.

You would need pre 72 on a front axle. The 62/72 series were about the same width. In 73 chevy went wider. Finding a pre 72 60 is going to be tough.

Yeah I doubt I can find a front 60 unless it's later. So my truck is narrower than 73+ trucks? I'm guessing "full width" references 73+ axles?
