Power Lock Diff Won't Unlock

Postby Diesel » Sat Apr 05, 2014 6:42 pm

This is totally non-dodge related but I figure no better source than you guys.

I have a 60 with a powerlok in it (clutch type diff like traclok) in my other truck and it won't unlock. Totally spooled. Nothing will allow it to unload so its just chirping around turns everywhere. I just got the truck and it came to me like this. I don't know what do about it other than to take the diff out and try and rebuild the powerlok. My question is whether you guys have ever seen something like this and why it happens. It blows my mind that friction disks can weld up like that. Its not lincoln-locked or anything in there...and taking tight turns won't open it up and free it from being a spool!

I drained it today. Put in a mix of gear oils I had and I just can't imagine friction modifier breaking this thing loose. I mean jacking up one rear wheel will unload an axle shaft. Its locked up that tight.

Sure it wasn't rebuilt at some point... way too tightly.

Ford track locks are know for this. Dodge uses 6 plate clutches. Ford uses 8.

We droped a Ford 70 power lock behind a cummins. It would rattle your teeth on a turn with a heavey load on turns.

Yes it was rebuilt and I have a receipt for it. What kind of a crazy person would set it up like this blows my mind. So I am going to be pulling the diff...no case spreader here...can some giant pry bars get a 60 diff out?

They may not have realized they were setting it up too tight. Some folks can't help themselves with thinking tighter is better.

UPDATE:

Pulled diff - came right out.

Had the Dana Spicer Power Lok manual for Dana 60/70 carriers next to me. There are only 4 ways that it can be setup - depends on how much grip or slip you want.

Pulled apart Power Lok :hs: :hs: :hs:

The shop that rebuilt the diff found a 5th way to assemble the parts! A way that the guys at Dana Spicer, who probably graduated top 5% at MIT, did not realize.

There was a nice mix of curved and flat steels and carbons. And to make sure it held real tight there was about 30% more material in there than prescribed.

Well fun was over - the 5th assembly method that was employed on this diff meant that one style of plate, which is required by all the dumb/wrong factory service manual methods was missing...

So a set of clutches and steels are in the mail...should be able to get it back together today. Lets hope that another issue doesn't show up once the diff is allowed to act like a differential.
