Great news everyone, my TDI is dead!

Well, probably at least. Due to America's idiotic emissions standards VW had to design the CR diesels with two EGRs. Apparently, due to a design flaw, the low pressure EGR allows condensation to build up in the intercooler piping and it can either freeze into an ice plug that will either stop the car from even cranking, send an ice chip through the engine and destroy it or the ice can melt and the engine will ingest water which hydrolocks the engine.

Unfortunately my TDI suffered the frozen intercooler so I had it towed to the dealer, they drained over a cup and a half of water out of my intercooler piping and when they went back to start it I was told it was running rough. Apparently they did a compression test and #3 had low compression. 5 hours later I'm told #3 is fine but cylinders #1 and #2 have low compression. Since the only reason I took the car to the dealer was to make VW aware of the issue and potentially recall the defective part (I contacted VWoA and they gave me a big middle finger and said f*** you, we're not doing anything for you) but I'm not sure I totally trust the dealer, especially with the conflicting information on which cylinder(s) have low compression. I was quoted $700 to pull the pan to see if the rods are bent and over $2500 to pull the head. I laughed in their face at that one.

So, I'm having the car towed to a shop that I trust, the diesel guy there has owned a few CR TDIs and he told me it'd be about $80 to pull the pan and see if there is any rod damage. It seems the only way to actually stop this issue is to delete the EGR. Guess what I had scheduled for my vacation next week? Why that's right, a full 3" straight pipe with a Malone stage II tune complete with a DPF and EGR delete! My damn luck...

Run it!!

What's a bent rod between friends? Low compression shouldn't cause too many problems through the summer, drive it and save for a winter rebuild.

Kinda.

I browse IL Car Enthusiast page. Mainly kids showing off their high dollar toys and stock mustangs. Anyways there is a diesel truck shout out. I browse through it and there's this kid saying he has a performance shop installing a p-pumo into his 1st Gen. So I ask what was wrong with the VE as I wanted to buy it. I get the "lol,,, its junk bro, its a low pressure pump that can't make power". So I ask what he was having installed. I got a bunch of generic answers. Couple more kids who know him get on there and blast him. Whatever.

A couple days later, this past Monday, I see a post on CompD. Writing styles the same, same vague mods, etc. So I say "hi Keith" and he told me to get my lame jazz "nearly stock 1st Gen" (my SIG) out ta there, he wanted to talk to the big boys.

Jim Cecil gets on there asking what was wrong with the VE. Kid says the shop told him there oil coming out where it connects to the pump. Cecil asks who the shop was. He names it and says their a good shop, friends with some high end boat retailer.

I know the guys. I wouldn't let them change an oil filter and I said as much.

It devolved from there when he called me a rainbow colored name that started with F.

In the end, after 18 pages, he threatened violence on everyone who jumped in. He's banned.

Reading stuff on the "1st gen dodge diesels" Facebook page makes my head hurt. It's kinda like a train wreck in slow motion.

It's terrible enough to look away, . . . . . . . but you just can't help but peek.

Ya, but it truly shows the vast average of the diesel industry. It truly is sad.......massive injectors, afc delete, and stock turbo are the rave still.......

Thanks guys.... I really do like the forum side of things......organized, moderation (by this I mean the other members, as far as flow goes, as well as the moderators themselves). But the newer age stuff is by design the easy stuff...... such as Facebook, twitter, etc...

It is tough because when someone posts, you'll get 50 responses within 10 minutes, from the majority, not even looking through the comments, or the original post, for that matter.

So yes, it is very tough to sort out. But, it has taken a lot of my time away from the forums, which I regret.... but don't have a lot of choice over. I truly have a desire to help 1st gen people..... People have a tremendous amount of pride in their trucks....and way too often, is their performance side of things, led astray by poor word of mouth and rumor.

What's the going rate for HE351CW's now a days. Been looking at the gds setup for my stock dually, and came across a HE351CW with a new in box 10 blade compressor wheel and shaft for $400. I texted the guy about it to see about the mileage, etc. Ad says normal side to side play, but no in or out play.
Seems these are a good all-around turbo even if its still a stock truck

Edit, heard back, its off an '06 2500, roughly 130k miles. He's in the process of "rebuilding" it with that BAE compresser wheel and shaft. Didn't mention if he was doing new bearings as well or not. Guess there's a guy ahead who wants it as is, in pieces.
Guess we'll see

I paid for a known good one from Mark Nixon. Shipped for $375.

Typically, the turbine side is what you need to look out for. My buddy sold his, 150k mile takeoff for $400 plus shipping. So figure $300-$450 for a decent one.

Also don't discount the HE341. Tons cheaper smd still a good charger.
