99 neon dohc

Postby DodgeFreak » Wed Apr 15, 2015 9:43 am

My brother in law brought his neon over for an oil leak. Found the cam seals leaking. Replaced both and he made it 4 miles before the car died. Dad said it sounds like no compression. Timing belt was 2 months old. What did we miss when we replaced the seals. We put it on tdc before we tore it apart.

Has anyone ran a sohc on a dohc bottom end? I know it can be done but people shave the pistons for some reason. Not sure if it's a clearance issue or what. Also will the dohc comp ture run with the sohc head.

I know nothing about swapping heads but timing belts are screwy things. Whenever I do anything like you did that requires I remove the belt ......its replaced regardless. That doesn't help you now I know.

Chances are the belt wore in clockwise and you turned it around upon reinstalling it and it walked off or chewed itself up.

It's a weird deal with those things man. Some of those timing gears can be worn enough that they'll actually taper themselves or just be worn unevenly across where the belt rides. We use to fight the cheap auto parts belts riding off the upper gears all the time but since strictly using Gates or OEM belts we don't have issues.
The absolute worst vehicles that would do that to use was the old 1.9/2.0 escort motors. They would absolutely whip you. Buying a cam gear usually took care of it.

Yall didn't happen to leave a cam gear bolt loose? You could have just slipped over or broke the cam pin? Worth a look.

Sometimes you can get luck and not get the valves? I've found a few that lived after a belt break.

Did somebody say neon?

Sohc head will work on a dohc bottom end with a little work as youve discovered. The computer will rrun it but the engine harness is slightly different. Do you have the hydraulic or mechanical tensioner? The first version of the mecjanical liked to back off for no reason. Being a 99 it couldve been either. if not that id put my money on one of the cams, probably the intake, moving before you got the slack out of the belt. If it sounds like no compression you probably have some bent valves.

Fyi, a 2.4 dohc head is the same. Just be sure to swap in the 2.0 cams. And I think theres a dowel on the block side you may have to swap off your old head as well.

:| yes yes we did.... I torque them before I time them and dad torques them after he times it....well.....we forgot after he timed it....may get lucky but I doubt it....

It has a hyd tensioner. from what I've gathered is the older 2.4 heads work but 02 or 03 up heads are slightly different with the oil port or drain or something. Chances are we will swap a sohc head on it, or maybe buy 8 exhaust valves and replace them. and slap it back together. Do you know if the dohc valves are the same as the sohc??
