Were in the mid 30's here. Spent the morning before work working on shoveling the 12+" of snow off my roof. Only got one side done before I had to call it quits. Now I gotta borrow a blower to clear it away from the house, as I've lost any room to shovel off the decks.
I'm over it, it can be spring anytime

We've had sleet and freezing rain here since 2:30am Friday. The power went out at 2:30pm Friday. Looks like it's gonna be a while. The up to 30mph gusts of wind is wreaking havoc on the ice laden trees. Power outages everywhere. My Son's home's power pole feed has been ripped from the home. The meter-base is hanging by the home's cables.

The heavier stuff is done. It's suppose to end (high wind included) . . . . . Saturday afternoon.

Edit: As of 12:00pm Saturday, the power's still out and may still be awhile.

The 25kw (50kw surge) Genset is doing just fine. :D

What do you northern guys use to combat ice on your roofs? I've got some buildup on my modular, and short of bashing it with a hatchet/hammer id like to get it taken care if before it causes leaks. Its not thick, maybe 1/2"-1, the gutters are full though, solid 3-4". Especially on the west side, there's a skylight and noticeable ice buildup. Haven't gotten to cleaning that side yet to see how thick.
I was told some urea fertilizer works and wont hurt the shingles, saw some sort of roof tablet, hockey puck looking stuff in a 5gal bucket. Wasn't sure if it was rock salt or what

I put fantastic insulation in my roof - keeps most of it from building up in the first place. Of course, I have a steep metal roof which helps a lot too. I would scrape the snow off and hope the ice melts in the next week. They are predicting mid to upper 30's this week here and maybe 40 + next week. Never mind, I just looked up Boyne City and you are about 265 miles straight north of me. (I'm about 20 miles from the IN state line). I helped a guy spread salt on his shingle roof once. I don't know if there are negative side effects for the roof though.

I'm hoping in the next few years when we need to reroof the house to build a "fake" roof on top of what's there, only build it with more pitch, and insulate the crap outta it, as well as use steel. I've got most the snow off, and even though it was 28-30 today, what was left was melting, and the sun was quite warm. I know salts hard on the shingles,, but so is smashing the ice off with a hammer :D

I may just be too worrisome. Driving around and looking at other houses and the ice buildup, mines nothing compares to others, but I just hate it to cause a problem

Insulation to keep it from melting is the 1st thing, 2nd is keep the snow off the edges. I have to use a roof rake to keep my mothers edges clean, it helps keep the water from puddling at the edge of the roof. Sometimes I have to get up and beat a couple troughs thru the ice to let the water out and put a little salt on it. One option is heat tape, put it on in a wave shape to keep the ice from starting. We did this at work, it seems to keep most of the ice off.
I've heard old timers say fill a sock with rock salt, then lay it up there perpendicular with the gutter. It keeps a trough melted so any water runs off and can't freeze at the edge.

Does anybody have one of those Lisle brand plastic creepers? I'm looking at one with the 4 inch wheels, but need to know how tall it is. The ads say it's the same body as the ones with the 2 inch wheels.
If anybody has the short one can they measure the height for me from the ground? Then I can figure out how tall the other is. I need to know if it will fit in the service truck, it would suck to spend $80 and have it not fit.

I finally have my cold pipe done, and painted. Just have to finish the ic pipe. I am in need of another 12cm housing for my hybrid though as I found some rather bad cracks in the divider, and I don't want to risk it for too long knowing it could take out 2 turbine wheels
