Trans temp showed up. I think it took the scenic route. Hope to get them put in this weekend.

I got my restricted firearms license the other day, so I can legally purchase handguns, and rifles now, which is nice (waited almost three months for the card to come in). The plan at this point is to pick up a semi auto .22 simply for cost of ammunition, then acquire some more fun caliber pistols. At this point though I have fairly limited knowledge on them, so any recommendations you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Make your first pistol a 22. Its a lot cheaper to learn on it than a larger fun caliber.

On a larger fun caliber. Start learning up on reloading. Your not going to practice much on factory ammo prices.

I like guns, I've always felt a .40 or .45 acp is one of the best handgun rounds for self defense. They (.45 especially) expend most of their energy into whatever it is your defending yourself against, as opposed to say a .380 or 9mm, which are smaller and faster and more likely to zip through than hang around and cause carnage.

The main drawback with a bigger bore gun is typically more recoil, and less round carrying capacity.

I'm classic, I like m1911s and six guns :D

But you and Philip are right, learn on a rimfire and progress from there

I’m a fan of the 1911’s too, and I did go and shoot a .22 (unsure of the model), and a .45acp 1911 at a range that lets you try stuff. Then I talked to another guy that recommended a 226 for a .22, which by the ones I’ve seen there I tend to agree they’re a nice compact, and simple design that’s what I’m looking for in a .22.

I changed the heater core in my '97 yesterday, which is not something I recommend for the faint of heart. I had been smelling antifreeze a little lately so I thought I better do it before it blows out. It had 1 little stain about an inch across and an inch down, so it wasn't leaking much yet. I did find the R134A leak I have been cursing for a couple years though. The evaporator was all green from dye near the bottom of it.
Plus I got my new digital LED gauges installed. A little over 9 hours from start to finish, the kids and I were whipped!

I've only shot a buddy's larger caliber pistol once, put 6 holes in a sign when we were kids. We were firing .38 rounds through a .357, not sure how safe that was, but it was sure fun!

I did a heater core on a 2000ish gmc, and boy was that ever a pain in the posterior. Basically have to disassemble the entire dash just to get to the freaking thing. Ended up taking me two days, and I had the cup holders full of screws.

I couldn't believe it but the other day walmart had 550 rounds of 22lr for 19 bucks.. Its been years since I could get 22's. Start with 22's then if you want to graduate to a bigger caliber but a low cost per round your not going to beat 9mm for a pistol. Now you can also get some real hot rounds for a 9mm that was not available 20 plus years back. Everybody has there own ideas on what is good and what is bad. I love a 357 magnum revolver. They are dual purpose. 1, fire weak 38 special rounds for fun, 2 if you want to blow fire, split engine blocks, and make a lot of noise step up to the 357 magnum rounds. If you want to learn about guns go to Hickok45 on youtube. He is a retired school teacher and has done gun reviews for 6 plus years. Also Paul Harrel on youtube is great. A few other channels like Iraqveteran8888 and sootch are on the edge of ok. As Philip says if you want you could get into reloading if you want to shoot alot of bigger stuff. You can still get ammo on deals some times. 223 or 5.56 can be purchased reasonable for rifle ammo. Years back I could buy 1000 rounds of 7.62 x 39 for just over a hundred bucks,,,,, those days are over. I even got 500 rounds of 12 gauge buck shot 5 years back for a great price. I could type for hours on guns, but will keep it short. I assume your after guns that you won't be conceal carrying ?? Not sure if you can even do that in Canada. In Maine now we have constitutional carry, don't even need a permit to conceal carry.

Yeah, there’s actually no carry of any kind here. Until recently just transporting your handguns was quite a hassle involving two phone calls, and a permit, and you were only allowed to transport between your home and the range you had a membership at. It’s still not the easiest thing to do, but the permit only needs to be acquired once every five years. But if you get pulled over, and your guns are out of sight you have no legal obligation to tell the officer that you have guns.

A .357 magnum revolver is on my list of wants as well, neat that .38 special rounds can be fired through them.

Dman if you buy a 1911 model do your self a favor. Buy the first one with nonadjustable sights. You need to learn the proper way to grip one to hit with them. I have seen many people buy 1911's with adjustable sights. The very first thing they do is a improper grip and adjust the sights for that bad hold. The nonadjustable sights teach you proper holding. Then you can shoot any 1911 you pickup, except the adjustable sights that someone set improperly.

I have around 40,000 rounds threw 1911's. Wore out one reloader. The second one was about 2/3's wore out when I got out of playing so hard.

A 1911 in 22 caliber would be the best one to learn on. If your thinking of play with 1911 series.

Much more fun with 38's. About half the recoil, noise ect. A 38 will chamber in a 357, but a 357 will not fit in a 38. The round does not go in enough to close the cylinder. When they developed the 357 magnum the case is just a little longer so it physically can't go in enough. Good thing for sure. Most likely would blow up the gun. Same thing for a 44 magnum, you can fire 44 special's in them. I will say that if you fire a lot of 38 specials in a 357 magnum sometimes you have to clean the cylinder so the 357 will chamber. With a 38 shorter case it can gunk up the cylinder a little bit then the longer 357 case can stick going in. Its to bad you don't have conceal carry, but that also will help you choose guns. If you don't have to ever conceal then you most likely want to stay away from real short barrels, stay away from 380's,25 acp's, and the very light 9mm pistols. For range work its always better to have a longer and slightly heavier gun. Longer barrel has a better sight picture, absorb recoil, and just a much more enjoyable day at the range. A 9mm like a Glock 17 or equivalent size gun is fun to shoot, but with any other high capacity semi auto your going to burn through the ammo real quick. At least with a revolver its going to slow down the rounds being fired. One more advantage to a revolver is they are easy to run. People that don't have lots of experience with fire arms can run a revolver. There is no safety, no fail to eject, no fail to feed ect. Now that everyone has fallen asleep reading this I will sign off. :D

Hey Philip, hows it going?? I need to call you to say hi sometime. Your phone number the same?? Anyway, I have no experience with 1911's. I know its silly, but a 1911 with one in the pipe, hammer back with the safety on just plain scares the hell out of me. I know some guys carry them that way. Some carry one in with the hammer down, some with a empty chamber. I know they are very nice, just not for me. I do agree with you, its great to practice with a 22 in the very same frame and operating procedure then step up. That is one feature the 1911's have for sure.

Ducati, congratulations on your firearms license. I echo everyone else and say buy something that you can afford to shoot. I reload not only to save money, but also I feel I get a better product in the end.

Philip, 40,000 rounds, that’s impressive! When I finished school and got a job, one of the first things I bought was a Colt 1911. I certainly hope I can get that many rounds through it one day.
