Welding Bed Frame Angle

Postby meby » Wed Nov 22, 2017 4:46 am

I use various bed frame angle steel for misc projects. I welded some together this week I couldn't get to weld worth a darn. The bead puddled up and wouldn't stick unless I pushed the stick directly in the weld to the point it just about blew a hole through it. The welds are really soft and mushy too. My question is what kind of steel is that? It had tons of deflection and yet smash off a piece and it looked like cast iron might if you break off a chunk.

Good question, I've wondered that myself a time or 2. Sometimes it's great for a project and sometimes it's crap!

From the internet research I've done it looks like it could be some sort of high carbon/spring steel something or other, but I'm not very educated when it comes to welding and metallurgy. I was hoping someone else might know.

All I know is it drills like its made from diamonds. I made a radio mount in the truck with it and what a pain in the ass. I rewired a welder just today and I tried the welder out on some scrap bed frame. It fell apart after a good tack. Junk.
