So far.......there's been more done to my dodge than ever done on this truck. Known it since purchased new......only way I went for it.

Yeah I bought it,3000$ and 1200$ worth of parts later I have a decent truck with 149k on the clock.....can't beat it.

I’ve been dealing with nightmare of a duramax recently. Swapped engines shortly after the kid bought it when the engine in it spun 4/5 main bearings, then it cracked the low/reverse housing on the transmission, and I forgot to swap the piston the first time I pulled the trans, so it had to come back out to do that, then it didn’t shift right after that, so he brought it back in, I pulled the trans for the third time. Put it back in Friday, and it ran through the gears once properly, then something went wonky, and it throws a p0776, and won’t shift out of first gear. Checked the trip solenoids the other day, then pulled the valve body apart to check for sticky spools. Nothing was obvious, so I’m still at a loss. Testing it this morning after putting it back together last night. Fingers crossed I never have to see the stupid thing again.

Everything fails.......especially when beat on. There are just too many 300/400k odometer readings on running driving working trucks around me to believe they are as horrible as the punk kids say. How many worn out valve bodies have been replaced on the newer dodge units.....or smoking knocking 6.7 cummins because some ass hat decided to haul something on a hot tune? Don't even get me started on ford......sthi they can't even design a freaking intercooler tube to stay put for more than 100k on their trucks or turbos that don't snap their shaves under moderate repetitive boost. Freaking 25 year old h1c holds up better than that! Lol
The Alison trans is a mysterious b!tch.......I am definitely green on them.

I have no doubt this truck will serve me well........as I'm not an idiot and I don't need to be the fastest thing out there lol
I've had fast stuff, this one won't need to fit that bill......I've still got 5 cummins engines and two cummins powered trucks for that ;)

Been reading about cavitation damage on ih 6.9 and 7.3 diesels, have hung out here and on dtr for many years, and have never heard of this. I'm guessing that cavitation is not an issue with cummins motors, know a guy in indiana hauled fema trailers with 2nd gen dodge, put a million on it then overhauled it and put close to another million on it.

It is possible for almost any high compression engine to experience cavitation, 7.3 idi's are most vulnerable because they have suuuper thin cylinder walls. They are a 6.9 bored I believe .110 over.

6.9s cavitate too, It just takes a lot longer for the .110" thicker walls to be eaten through.

I think the main reason you don't hear or see 5.9s cavitating is the lower compression ratio. Idi's are 20.5:1 or 21.5:1, 12 valves are 17.5:1 I think.

So that nightmare duramax never left. I’m putting a different used transmission in it today. Pulled the junk one in just over an hour.

It finally works!!! T-case is probably on its way out though as it’s throwing abs codes for the output speed sensor, and the oil that came out of it was disgusting. If I’m honest I hope he tries to tackle that swap on his own, because I genuinely never want to see the gd thing again.

Come on your a mechanic. All you have to do is tell him your sorry he bought a money pit. Then take his money and forget about it. Its just another piece of machinery to deal with.

Yeah, but I’d rather see it once every six monthsish rather than doing the same job 4 times in a month.

Buy Better Parts! Don't let your customer cheap out on you, you'll always be the one to pay for it in the long run.....either with you back or time.

Got 2 gallons of new synthetic hyd. oil and dumped it in the tank for a 10% oil / 90% D2 blend. Runs about as quiet as a commonrail, and got an unexpected bonus of slight power bump. Only downsides are (expected) more smoke at full tilt, and the turby is a bit slower to light.

I've got 15 gallons of new 15w40 that was mistaken for hyd. oil and put into a tractor. I blended it with 8% gasoline and am letting it settle out metal/ contaminants for 1 month before I dump it in the tank.

I've used 15-40 from a skid steer hydraulic system in my truck, but I didn't cut it with anything, and gas just sounds really bad to me. I was going to Indiana and dumped in 10 gallons, then topped off with fuel so it was well mixed. I got 26.5 mpg on that trip at about 70-75 mph. I figured mixing it that heavy wouldn't hurt anything since I was running hard for about 10 hours and the engine was going to stay hot. No way I would mix more than 2-3 gallons for my mostly around town driving, I think it would coke up the injectors too much.
I'm also not impressed with the thought of burning synthetic oil, I'd rather run something that is not man made. Who knows what kind of deposits it will leave behind?
