Buying a truck, he wants the money wired

Postby dpuckett » Mon Feb 25, 2008 9:14 pm

I am looking at a W350 that needs some work for a real good price. As in, buy it, fix it, sell for $3-4K profit: or fix it, keep it, sell Green Guzzler for $2-3K profit. The guy wants me to wire him the money (would prefer the whole amount, but said he could work with me on that), and go pick it up this weekend, and have his brother give me the title. I'm more in favor of cash in hand, title in hand, we sign and part company. He says he needs to pay off the W350 to get the title, and then go get his "new" (to him) truck on Thursday. I'm thinking I need to meet him at the bank to sign the paperwork to get the title in my name.

I have plans for this coming weekend; have had for 2mo or more, so the weekend isnt an option. MIGHT be able to do it Sunday, but would have to take Monday off to sleep. Should I just let this one go, or is there another option? I COULD get off Wednesday if needed, then we could all be happy.

It sounds like this guy is wanting you to trust him like a brother even though he is a total stranger. I have a red flag esp. since he wants to a. pay off said truck and b. go get his "new" truck, which means when you get there your money is gone. My vote is walk away, or possibly send Bill down to get for a good price. ;)

DP most banks will give you the title if you ask for it. All he has to do is tell them he has it sold. I have done this a few times and have no problems.

Why doesn't he want to meet you and give you the title if you send the money. Why does his brother need to hand you the tittle.

Tell him you want the name of the bank and the person to talk to. The only way he is going to get any money is in person or a wire transfer to his bank and the bank sends the title to you not him.

There are to many red flags on this one DP.

i sell alot of vehiles and theres a few ways of ding it
a you can pay a guy a deposite in person and get a writen resite with the vin and his signature on it witch works

b you could wire the money but i would still want to get a resite plus the ownership at the sae time so its pointless of wiring it you might as well pay him cash or somthing like that

c the best way and safest way is to pay in person and pick vehile up

and the whole thing about meating his brother (just like you and i are brothers, if you catching my drift ;-) ) would turn me off right away, the only thing i might exept is hes away, then i would ask were, and the awhile later i would ask him again and make sure his story strait,

if its a good deal go for it =, you can always part it out

I think he's an honest guy, but you cant be too careful these days. I think we have a deal worked out.

I asked him where it was financed, and it's through a local bank, in a small town. I am going to meet him tomorrow (had to deal my foreman 5% of the profit from the sale of whichever truck I sell), look the truck over, and then go to the bank and get the title. Then we are going to return and load the truck. I explained it was a lot of money to be wiring, and not to take it personally that I dont trust a total stranger, and he was cool with that.

I was kind of pre-occupied last night, and I think had a bad connection (who'd have thought, cel to cell?), and didnt get his drift during the conversation.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I like the idea of sending Bill to get it DIRT cheap (vs just cheap), but I'm afraid I still wouldnt see the truck ;-). As for parting it out, I could do that, or just put the Green cab on the "new" frame.

If you can do the "cash in hand" deal, that's best. The other way just smells too much. I'd be really leery of this. My .04. ;)

How do you guys find these real cheap trucks? :x

Around here a cheap truck is rusted to death, or has a hole in the block. That's my luck!

This one has a hole in the Getrag case- does that count? No pocket bearing to speak of. I havent torn it apart yet, just deduced that by the slop in the input shaft (about 15* of movement and rattling).

Afraid to look inside the differential housing......
