Yep, gotta love emissions equipment that makes fuel mileage worse, thus increasing the amount of fuel that has to be burned, thus increasing our dependence on foreign oil. Sort of going the wrong way, isn't it?

It's done to reduce exhaust temperatures which lowers NOx emissions. It sucks for mileage, but is a work around for emissions regulations dictated by politics rather than an actual interest in making things better. Gas cars have been using it since the early 70's, IIRC. Same thing with catalytic converters and now diesel particulate filters.

Ever worked on just about any gasser from the 80's? EGRs, air pumps, multiple cats, computer controlled carbs, miles of vacum lines :?

Yes I have :x . We had an 87 Chevy Caprice Classic station wagon at one point when I was growing up. The water pump went out in it. It took us 8 hours to swap it out due to all of the garbage in the way. Driving that car prompted me to save up my pennies and dimes and buy my first car, my 90 Dodge pickup. Much nicer to work on. Kind of like the 72 Chevy pickup we had in the early 80's.
