reliability

Postby 89silverbullet » Wed May 14, 2008 10:25 pm

I have owned a non turbo 7.3 ford, a 94 350 dually chevy, and a 95 z28 camaro. as far as the reliability to walk out in any temperature and start with no hick up, my 89 cummins is the winner by far.

I had a buddy out in west texas with a powerstroke. we parked right next to each other one night. he plugged in his powerstoke with the chips and the juice and popcorn or whatever makes them go fast. next mornig with snow on the trucks he was grinding the starterwith his high idle on. I walk out no wait to start light and it fired right up. testomony to the durability of these trucks.
#1 in alpine texas. recoded temp on that day was 12*F

I just went and looked at 92 and a 93 D250s. The 92 had 334k on it, and the 93 had 314k both had autos, 1 was an LE. They both showed their age, but they ran. I was gonna buy the 92, guy wanted $600 for it, but it was pretty rusty. Hole in the floor, and it was pretty bad under the hood.
Started up though.
Is that reliable enough for ya? ;)

Just turned 333,000 miles..............

Other than a rear, and a real scary noise coming from the getrag, she's pretty sound.

Oh, and the bottom hinge on the drivers door is about ready to pull through, but thats a 80-93 dodge thing............

you pretty much have to run a cutting torch trough the block for them to not work. i am sad that it says dodge but i am proud that it also says cummins 8)

Well, no truck from the 80's-early 90's is better.................. :?

i just wish Dodge made a replacement truck for my cummins. You know, buy a new 92 minus the motor.........

Remember I have seen your truck a couple of times.

Philip, no, it was better! The hole in the floor was only about 5 inches, and the roof rail was scabby all the way across, but the rest was mostly minor. It was the heater lines, A/C compressor, and that stuff under the hood that was rusty that bothered me. When I looked down at the compressor clutch, the pulley was cocked sideways a little bit. If it had a LSD, I would have bought it right then. I still might. ;)

I have 2 89's My complaints, 1: the use of salt on the roads in winter.
2: 3.07 gear ratio not available
I have one that only see's summer and execpt for the flaky paint thing it is mint. The other one is crusty. Just bought a cab and front end from a mint 90 from arizona. MINT. The cab is stripped of dash and wiring due to a donor project but 100% rust free. I have chunked both rear ends. One I found a junk yard one and the other I was able to fix. Both carriers stretched the hole where the pin holds the spider gears and bang. I love driving around in a square truck. :D
