Getrag is the brand of manual transmission put in the 1st gen trucks. The 5-spd manual transmission is a Getrag G-360, used behind the diesels from 89-93. The NV4500 was used in the later (94 and up) Dodge applications and is a common swap so people call the manual trans by the name (Getrag or NV4500) to specify which 5spd manual trans they have.

Better is debatable. The Getrag has larger gears, but smaller bearings and can have issues with the synchros. The NV4500 has smaller gears, better bearings, more aftermarket support (an upsized input shaft for use with dual disc clutches), is more common, and likes to lose 5th gear (many fixes available in the aftermarket). The only problems I've had with the Getrag in my 90 was due to a crappy rebuild and in the 92 was due to a tired case bearing coming apart (after 230k miles of service). Unless you are a hard core sled puller or drag racer and need to go to the 1 3/8" input shaft for reliability/clutch selection, I would stay with the Getrag. My .02, plenty of people will agree and disagree with me. Overfill the Getrag by a quart and avoid lugging it (especially when towing/loaded heavy) and it should live a long life.

Glad to help. Most of the info above was collected from reading this forum. My own personal experience has been with the Getrag only and using it as a daily driver/occasional tower/occasional hauler of heavy loads. The info on the transmissions was gathered from posts by KTA (but I don't remember which thread(s) ) so I can't point you to them for the exact source. Like I said, I agree with lots of people on here on the Getrag being a pretty good trans, but others prefer the NV. Happy hauling.

I can say this about a getrag.

It's darn tough, no other transmission in this world, could have no synchro's, and sound like mine does, and not poop all over the asphalt.

I pulled with the getrag before. It does nice. The only thing that I have seen as a upgrade is changing some bushing into a ball bearing. I think the main input??
